In Loving Memory of Walter Peter Matulis, Sr. December 21, 1930 – July 20, 2025 It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Walter Peter Matulis, Sr., who died peacefully on July 20, 2025, at the age of 94.

Born on December 21, 1930, in Boylston, Massachusetts, Walter spent his early childhood on a small family farm. After his family moved to the city, he never let go of his dream to return to the land, a dream he fulfilled in 1956, when he built his own farm from the ground up in Upton, Massachusetts, all while working full-time as a machinist. Soon after graduating from Worcester Boy’s Trade School, Walter answered the call to serve his country and joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Japan, he developed a deep and lasting respect for Japanese culture, an experience that shaped his worldview and stayed with him for the rest of his life.

Back home, Walter became a well-regarded horseman, dedicating himself to raising and working with horses. His love of animals and the land was more than a passion, it was part of who he was. Walter was also deeply committed to his community. He was active in the Upton Boy’s Club, a lifelong member of the VFW, and a proud member of the Nipmuc Rod & Gun Club. He volunteered with the American Heart Association and was always ready to serve when called upon.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances J. Matulis; his parents, Monica Letsky Matulis and Peter Matulis, who both emigrated from Lithuania; and his sisters Nellie Chuplis, Arlene Stalilonis, and Ann Roman.

He is survived by his son, Walter Matulis, Jr., and daughter-in-law Julie Matulis, of South Carolina; grandson Christopher F. Matulis and his wife Kimberly Grant, and great-grandson Chris Isaiah Matulis, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and grandson Matthew Matulis and his wife Jocelyn Matulis, of Woodstock, Connecticut, along with great-grandsons Wyatt Matulis and Kellan Matulis. Walter also leaves behind many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews, all of whom he loved dearly and affectionately referred to as “his crew.” His pride in his extended family was boundless, and the love he gave them was returned many times over.

He will also be fondly remembered for his legendary annual pig roast, an open invitation to relatives, friends, acquaintances, and even the occasional stranger he happened to meet. It was a true reflection of Walter’s generous heart and love of bringing people together. Walter lived a life of strength, humility, and unwavering dedication to those around him. In his spirit of generosity, he never turned away a soul in need of help. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon Street, Upton, on August 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM.  Military honors will take place following the Mass. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to so many.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Walter’s memory to Catholic Charities.
