Walter Melvin Mauch

Walter Melvin Mauch, affectionately known as Walt, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in Pocatello, Idaho, at the age of 95. Born on June 20, 1930, in Tuttle, North Dakota, Walt grew up in a large family, the son of Karl and Katharina Mauch. He was one of fifteen siblings, with eight brothers and six sisters who shaped his formative years with love and camaraderie. Walt moved to American Falls, Idaho and met the love of his life Emma (Jean) Alston and were married on January 28, 1951. Walt enlisted in the U.S Marines and was stationed stateside at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California for two years.

Walt and Jean returned to American Falls where Walt worked for his brother Adolph on his farm and later as a mechanic at various tractor and automotive shops. Walt's love of farming prompted Walt and Jean to purchase their own land in Power County which they named "The Spring Hollow Ranch", and it was here that they raised their three children. Walt enjoyed ranching and cultivating the land and he never had a failed crop. Walt served proudly on the Board of Directors of the Aberdeen/Springfield Canal Company. He also served on the Board of Directors of the NFO (National Farmers Organization). In later years, Walt worked along side Jean in the Spring Hollow Ranch and Gallery where he built beautiful frames for artwork.

Walt was instrumental in discovering the Crystal Ice Caves in the Power County Idaho where he helped to build the trails, install lighting and put air lines throughout the caves. Walt was involved in the opening of the caves while Jean conducted public tours.

Walt cherished the time spent square dancing with his beloved wife, Jean, with whom he shared 75 wonderful years. Together they danced across the united states. The love of travel took them to Europe, Hawaii and Alaska and many other destinations. They were snowbirds, traveling between Arizona and Idaho.

Walt enjoyed metal detecting, gopher trapping, woodworking and various other crafts and was always seen at the local coffee shop shooting the breeze with his brothers Tim and Karl (all three known as The Three Musketeers) as well as other friends and family. Walt enjoyed pulling weeds and cleaning up the community as well as helping out at the Power County Senior Center. Walt was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years.

Walt is survived by his Son Gary Mauch (Kate); Daughter Pamela Mauch; Son Harley Mauch (Louise); Brother Karl Mauch IV; as well as his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Katharina Mauch; Wife Emma Jean Mauch; seven brothers and six sisters.

A celebration of Walt & Jean's remarkable lives will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Powerhouse Christian Fellowship, 2905 Sunbeam Rd. American Falls. Military Honors for Walt will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Falls View Cemetery. He will be dearly missed and remembered for his unwavering spirit and the immense love he shared with all those who were fortunate to know him.
