Walter L. Merth, affectionately known as "Butch" and "Walt," passed away on March 16, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on September 18, 1948, Walter was a long-time resident of Delaware County, making his home first in Yeadon, then Crum Lynne and later in
Broomall, Pennsylvania. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and a man of remarkable skill, curiosity, and generosity.
Walter was the beloved husband of Clara L. (Lord) Merth (Lee), with whom he shared an extraordinary 60-year love story. Their journey together began in childhood, when Walter, just nine years old, began courting Clara by crafting dollhouses for her out of cardboard boxes. By the age of 17, they had already planned their future together.
Determined to build that life, Walter enlisted in the United States Navy. While home on leave from boot camp, he returned to Clara and, with the quiet help of Clara's sister Kathy, who stealthily gathered Clara's belongings, they set out to be married. With the consent of Walter's mother, they traveled three hours to Hagerstown, Maryland, where they were married on March 2, 1966.
Shortly thereafter, Walter began his service as a proud United States Navy Boilerman. After just 18 days of marriage, he reported for duty at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and on April 5, 1966, he set out to sea aboard the USS Granville S. Hall (YAG-40). Not long after, Clara joined him in Hawaii, unwilling to be apart for long. In February 1967, they welcomed their daughter, Cynthia, beginning the family that would remain at the center of Walter's life.
Following his military service, Walter returned to Pennsylvania with Clara and Cynthia, settling in Yeadon. There, he began his career as a Cadillac specialist auto mechanic at Center City Cadillac in Philadelphia. In December 1972, Walter and Clara welcomed their son, David, completing their family.
On July 29, 1978, Walter and Clara's marriage was blessed at Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Eddystone, Pennsylvania, a place that would remain meaningful throughout their lives.
Walter's professional life reflected both his talent and entrepreneurial spirit. As a Master Auto Mechanic, he opened Walt's Auto Service Center in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he served his customers with integrity and expertise and gave back to his community by offering free basic automotive classes. Later, he continued his work at Scott Paper Company (Kimberly-Clark) in Chester, where he repaired trucks of all kinds.
A lifelong learner and natural problem-solver, Walter often remarked that he felt a kindred spirit with Benjamin Franklin, admiring his wide-ranging interests and self-taught mastery. True to that spirit, Walter developed skills across countless fields, including tropical fish breeding, electronics, carpentry, videography, dog grooming, CNC manufacturing, and gardening. To those who knew him, it often seemed there was nothing he could not fix, build, or figure out.
Above all, Walter was a devout Catholic and was a man guided by his personal motto, "Faith, Love, and Family." He instilled these values deeply in his children and grandchildren and lived them daily through his actions, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Walter was the son of the late Walter L. and Delores (White) Merth. He is survived by his loving wife, Clara L. Merth; his children, Cynthia Bermudez (Jorge L. Bermudez) and David Merth (Karen Merth); his cherished grandchildren, Katelyn (Lalo Hernandez), Samantha (Chandler Monks), Gabriela (Alexx Folawn), Anna Bermudez, Jason Merth (Anna Sanfino), and Christopher Merth; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Saint Rose of Lima R.C. Church, 1901 Chester Pike, Eddystone, Pennsylvania, from 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM. Interment will be held at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery in Springfield, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Walter's memory to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Walter's care team at the Hospital of the University Pennsylvania, and the Abramson Cancer Center Penn Presbyterian. His team included Drs. Corey J. Langer, Anthony Lanfranco, Sunil Singal, Keith Cengel, Evan Alley, Deepak Sudheendra and their staff. When hope seemed distant, they remained steadfast and vigilant, offering exceptional medical care, compassion and reassurance though every step. God's grace and the tireless dedication of this remarkable team gifted Walter with an extraordinary 11 additional years with us. We will remain forever thankful.
Walter's legacy of love, ingenuity, and devotion to family and friends will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
