Obituary For Walter Nicks Burton, Jr. "Nick"
Walter Nicks Burton Jr. (Nick) was born on September 26, 1943.
He started learning carpentry skills at a young age under the guidance of his father. He later accomplished the goal of building his first family home in Chapel Hill and later a home for his parents in Durham, NC. When he was 22, he was introduced to Robbie Bryant by a mutual friend, and they were married 5 months later.
In 1965, Nick began working at IBM in Research Triangle Park and began serving in the North Carolina Army National Guard (7 yrs). Children Walter Burton III and daughter Kyra were born, and the family moved to Boca Raton, FL. Over the years, their home was always the place kids in the neighborhood wanted to be and Nick was the center of the fun. Nick coached in Boca Jets for many years, making a difference in the lives of many. Then, after transferring to Charlotte, NC, in 1991, his second son, Michael, was born. This allowed Nick to continue to embrace fatherhood with wisdom, commitment, and quality time.
After 30 years, he retired from IBM in 1992. Four years later, the family moved back to Florida for 16 years. In 2010, they returned to Durham, NC. In recent years, they have been surrounded by love and a community of friends and family. Grandson Walter IV, "Beau" and granddaughter MacKenzie were a source of pride and unconditional love. Nick's children describe him as a deeply involved father, who was there for them every day and in every way and their very best teacher, mentor, advisor, and friend. He was also looked up to by his younger brothers, Bob and Jerry and countless other family members and friends.
In recent weeks, Nick has enjoyed discussing memorable moments and hearing from those from the past who report that he had a lasting impact. Nick spent his final days at home being cared for by his family and close friends. Nick had faith in God and his loved ones look forward to the day they will see him again. He was 80 years old.
A celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at a time and location to be determined. Send flowers to the service of Walter Nicks Burton, Jr. "Nick"
