Walter R. Poirier, 77, of Lowell, MA, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Tufts Medical Center after a period of declining health, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Boston, he was the beloved son of the late Walter H. and Mary (Parker) Poirier. Walter was raised in Lowell and Chelmsford. He attended St. Margaret's School, Chelmsford Public School and Lawrence Academy. He graduated from Lawrence Academy with the class of 1966.
Walter dedicated his career to public service as an Assessor for several municipalities. He worked for the City of Westford, the Town of Holliston for 16 years, and concluded his nearly 20-year career in the City of Leominster as Chief Assessor. He truly loved his work and was known for his dedication and camaraderie with his colleagues.
He was the husband of Sheila (Doughty) Poirier, the love of his life. Walter had a deep passion for golf-whether playing, watching, or talking about it, the game brought him endless joy. He cherished the time spent on the course with his close group of friends and was proud to have achieved two hole-in-ones.Above all, Walter loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. His warmth, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Christopher Poirier of Lowell, MA, and his daughter Danielle and her husband David Bonczar of Quincy, MA. He was predeceased by his son, Walter J. Poirier, victim of Peace Corps tragedy in Bolivia (2001), and his sister, Kathy Hanson.
Walter's visitation will be Monday, August 18, 2025 from 3PM to 6PM at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX STREET, N. CHELMSFORD, MA.
