Walter A. Rindy, 106, of Mayville, ND, peacefully passed away Sunday evening, July 9, 2023, at Luther Memorial Home.
Walter was born on January 24, 1917, in Portland, ND to Anna (Raben) Rindy and William Rindy. He was baptized and confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church, rural Portland, ND. Walter attended country school in Primrose Township and graduated from Portland High School in 1936. After high school, he worked for an area farmer until he was drafted.
His military service started in 1942 where he received training in diesel mechanics at Nashville Auto Diesel. One of his cherished memories from this time was going to The Grand Ole Opry. During the war, he spent most of his time in the Pacific theater working in the motor pool. After returning home in 1945, he stopped at Mayville Motors where Lester Parish asked him what he did in the Army and offered him a job on the spot. This led him to take the train to Sears to buy a set of tools so he could start work at the dealership.
On October 26, 1946, he married Violet Johnson at Perry Lutheran Church. They made their home in Mayville where they raised their six children.
Walter was a rural letter carrier for Mayville and Hatton for 30 years. During those years, he also ran a TV and radio repair business which kept him busy. Whether he was delivering their mail or fixing their TV, he made many lifetime friends and admirers. After retiring from the Postal Service, Walter took to the greens and managed the grounds at the Mayville golf course for 10 years.
An active member of Mayville Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, VFW, American Legion Post 8 (78 years) and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association (70 years), are just a few of his many accolades.
He loved to play games – bingo, cards (any cards), Farkle, golf, pool and to dance with Vi. In his later years he took over the baking and was known for his chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies.
Walter is survived by six children: Wallace (Deborah) Rindy of Mesa, AZ, Marjorie (Keith) Maetzold of Park Rapids, MN, Duane (Sherry) Rindy of Fargo, ND, Edie (Pat) Burns of Mesa, AZ, William (Louise) Rindy of Bismarck, ND, Jennifer (Rick) Nepstad of Mayville, ND. Grandchildren: Wade (Traci) Rindy, Craig Rindy, Stephani Rindy, Jillae Rindy, Trent (Justine) Maetzold, Erin (Alex Nisbet) Maetzold, Brianna (Ian) McGurran, Kristina (Adam) Aikens, Isaac (Jenna) Nepstad and Jacob Nepstad, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
