Walter Schewe, 89, of Stevensville, passed away at Corewell Lakeland Health Center in St. Joseph on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph.
Walter was born on Dec. 25, 1935, in Wolhynien, Poland to the late Johann and Mathilde (Fischbuch) Schewe.
Walter immigrated to this country in 1951 and settled in Benton Harbor. On Oct. 24, 1959, he married Alma Lotto; she preceded him in death on July 26, 2013. Walter was an engineer with Heath Company from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. He served his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Walter enjoyed going to the St. Joseph Lincoln Senior Center and participating in activities there. He also took walks on the bluff. But most of all he loved spending time with family – especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
Walter is survived by his children: Harold Schewe of Stevensville, David Schewe of Stevensville, and Lisa (Kevin) Hackbarth of Spring Lake, Mich.; grandchildren: Harold Jr., Zachary, Jessica, Trace, Blake, Nate, Elyse and Amelia; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Johann and Mathilde; his wife, Alma; brothers: Alfred, Hugo, Edwin and Herbert; a sister, Waltraut; and daughter-in-law, Kimberly.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, with Pastor Robert Confer officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville. Visitation with the family precedes the service at the funeral home from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of God, 2627 Niles Ave., St. Joseph, MI 49085.
