Walter E. Spangler, 88, entered into rest on Monday, March 25, 2024, at UPMC Memorial. He was the loving husband of Malinda A. (Cook) Spangler for 39 years.
He was born on May 7, 1935, in York. His parents were the late Walter Z. and Myra (Orndorff) Spangler.
Walter was a U.S. Navy veteran, retiring after 33 years of service; he also worked as a first-class lineman, and later as a foreman, for Metropolitan Edison. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Rd. in York. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 4, with military honors by the York County Veteran Honor Guard. Those attending should meet at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance of the cemetery at 9:45 AM. The John W. Keffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Ave. York, is assisting with arrangements.
Including his wife Malinda, Walter is also survived by his children James F. Spangler of York, Michael E.J. Spangler of Philadelphia, and Matthew E. Spangler of Pittsburgh; a grandson Marc A. Spangler of Poquosin, VA, and two great grandchildren, Teagen Spangler and Mason Spangler; two sisters Eleanor Eberley of Huntingdon,TN, and Margaret Baker of North Andover, MA. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Spangler and his half-sister Vicki Orndorff.
Walt's three boys spent their childhoods hiking and camping in the great outdoors with him; once his sons were grown, Walt traded the tent in for a Winnebago and travelled widely with his wife Lindy. They enjoyed spending time camping and fishing with an ever-growing group of camping friends up and down the East Coast and down South.
