Walter A. Spencer, age 101, died peacefully at home with loved ones at his bedside on October 26,2024.
Born on June 21,1923 in Wollaston MA, Walter grew up in a home full of love, morality and kindness which he carried on throughout his life. He was a graduate of Quincy High School where he played hockey which led to his becoming a lifelong Boston Bruins fan. He was accepted to Boston University but like many of the young men of that era, Walter was drafted into the United States Army during his freshman year. He was stationed in England and proudly served as a Military Policeman (MP) for the duration of the war.
After the war, Walter entered Bentley College to complete his college education in Accounting. Shortly after, Walter met and fell in love with Florence (Bim) Ronan. They married on October 27,1951 and settled in Stoughton MA. Together, Walter and "Bim" raised three children, Nancy, Robert and Karen. For 40 years, Walter held the position of Assistant Comptroller at Reed and Barton Silversmith in Taunton, MA. As expected, Walter dedicated himself to the company and they, in turn, rewarded him with a fully paid trip back to England at his retirement.
Outside of Reed and Barton, Walter devoted his time to his passion of yardwork and golf. Walter took great pride in producing a "manicured" lawn and finely trimmed bushes. If he is not mowing or trimming, he is on the golf course perfecting his swing. Walter played into his mid 90's to the envy of many who played with him. Above all else, Walter was happiest when the family came for Sunday dinner at their home with many little feet running around. Walter truly is the epitome of the "Greatest Generation".
Walter Spencer was a loving husband of the late Florence (Bim) Spencer and a devoted father of Nancy L. Powers and her husband Joseph of Bridgewater, Robert E. Spencer and his wife Stephanie of North Easton and Karen L. Yung and her husband Francis of Bridgewater. He is also a proud "grandpa" of Katlyn, Joseph, Jonathan, Courtney, Alexander, Jillian, Thomas and the beloved and late Matthew Powers. He was also overjoyed to have twelve (12) great grandchildren.
All services will be held privately. Donations in Walter's memory may be sent to Wounded Warriors, Shriner's or St. Judes.
