Walter Garrett Terrell, a beloved father, devoted grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away on August 21, 2024 at Traditions at Hunter's Station. Walter was born on August 31, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, and he spent his formative years in the farming community of Floyds Knobs, where he graduated from New Albany High School.
Throughout his life, Walter was known for his unwavering commitment to both his family and his work He dedicated many years of his career as a manager at Pillsbury, where his leadership and work ethic left an indelible mark on his colleagues. Beyond his professional achievements, Walter was immensely proud to serve his country in the Indiana National Guard during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his character and instilled a deep sense of duty and honor.
Walter's passions extended beyond his career; he was an avid gardener, golfer, and fisherman. Yet, his greatest joy came from the time spent with his beloved granddaughters, Emma and Lilly Hauck. To him, nothing compared to the laughter, love, and cherished memories they created together. His family helped to build Scottsville Christian Church where he led the worship for 14 years.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patty (Dan) Hauck and Julie Terrell, who were not only his children but also his source of immense pride and joy. Walter is also remembered fondly by his grandchildren, Emma and Lilly, who brought light and laughter into his life. His family circle includes his brother-in-law, Henry Denton, and his brother-in-law, Jay Hamilton, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will carry on his legacy of love and kindness.
Walter is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Terrell; parents, Ernon and Helen Terrell; his sister, Anna Denton; his brother, Ralph Terrell; and his sister, Nancy Hamilton. Their memories remain close to the hearts of those he leaves behind, serving as a reminder of the strong familial bonds that defined his life.
A visitation will be held in his honor on August 26, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on August 27, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150. A funeral service will follow on the same day from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Walter Garrett Terrell, we remember a man who devoted himself to his family, his work, and his community. His spirit will forever inspire those who had the privilege to know him, and his memory will live on in the stories shared and the love felt by all whose lives he touched.
