Walter C. Zessin, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on June 18, 1951, in Canton, Illinois, Walter was the son of Elmer F. Zessin and Eleanor M. (McAlister) Zessin.
After graduating high school, Walter continued his education, earning an associate’s degree in Diesel Mechanics from Spoon River College. Walter worked small jobs before he went on to a long and rewarding career at ADM retiring.
Family was of utmost importance to Walter. He married Amy L. Whitehouse, and they were united in marriage on November 29, 1997, in Peoria, Illinois. Together, they welcomed two children, Amanda and Walter. He was previously married to Holly K. Sipp with whom he had two children, Mary and Jolene.
Walt is survived by his wife, Amy of Yates City; three daughters, Mary (Calvin) Plumer of Hanna City, Illinois, Jolene (John) Bruce of Belton, Texas, and Amanda (Zane) Holmstrup of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one son, Walter (Meleasha Brown) Zessin of Farmington, Illinois; and two brothers, Fred (Linda) Zessin of Pekin, Illinois and Donny (the late, Patsy) Zessin of Farmington. He is also survived by his beloved ten grandchildren, Laurel (Justin) Keyt, Mattie Plumer, Callie Plumer, Chloe Messersmith, Coitt Messersmith, Ciaran Messersmith, Alex Bruce, John Walter Holmstrup, Walter M. Zessin, and Nash Zessin. Including his parents, Walter was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Duncan
Walter was an ardent lover of the outdoors. His homestead was a sanctuary where he found solace and happiness. He had a passion for horses and enjoyed spending time in nature, whether it was through hunting or simply appreciating the beauty surrounding him. A spirited athlete, Walter also enjoyed coaching softball, where he shared laughter and camaraderie with friends and family.
Walter C. Zessin leaves behind a legacy of love for both his family and the great outdoors. His presence will be dearly missed, but his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2025 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. All are welcome to attend his service at his residence, 787 Knox Road 2300E, Yates City, Illinois, Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Greg Fitch will officiate.
