Wanda King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Light's Funeral Home on Mar. 18, 2026.
Wanda Elaine King, age 60 of Brooklyn, Ny transitioned Friday, March 13th in Schenectady, NY. Wanda spent her last hours with her (Daughter) Tanaya, (Son)Christopher, (Bonus son) Shirelle & (Niece) Nekesa.

Wanda was born on Monday October 4th, 1965, in Brooklyn, Ny at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital to the late Barbara Elaine King and Cleophas McCottry. She grew up in Brooklyn, East New York with her 3 sisters of whom she was the eldest, Ellen Brown (who preceded her in Jan of 2024) (57), Sherrene Phoenix (55) and Leslye McCottry (46). Wanda was raised by a village including her grandparents Ruby Delores Boston and William Hearst.

Wanda attended George Gershwin junior high where she gained many lifelong friends and sisters. Wanda attended Clara Barton High school before welcoming her first bundle of joy and baby girl Tanaya S. King in August of 1983 at the age of 17. Wanda decided that she would not let being a teenage mom stop her from furthering her education, she went back to school for her diploma and moved on to Brooklyn college where she dabbled in the thoughts of Law and Forensic Sciences. In 1987 Wanda changed routes and became employed at Blue/Cross Blue shield where she would stay for 7 years before welcoming her second bundle of joy, her baby boy Christopher King in January 1994 at the age of 28.

Although Wanda had a solid career, she always wanted more and made sure to keep her options open. 2 weeks after giving birth to her baby boy she received a call about a new career opportunity with the New York Police Department. Wanda would become a PCT (police communications technician) with NYPD and it would kickstart her 30-year career. She took pride in helping to keep the city safe and helping those in need. Wanda would be promoted twice; to Supervisor and then Principal 1. She was fair, direct, loving and a well-known jokester, often joining clubs at work to network with her friends and co-workers. Some of the clubs she enjoyed were The Crochet Club, Planner/Sticker Club & the breakfast club. Wanda was a well-known supporter of freelancing co-workers as well as their children, buying water here a snack pack there, girl scout cookies and more.

In April of 2010 Wanda welcomed her first grandchild Tristan William Burnette (Poohdee/Mr. Bill) and she adopted a new name Punin. Spending time with Tristan would turn out to be one of her greatest joys and anyone who knew her would confirm that. At 57 Wanda decided that early retirement was the only option, she was ready to enjoy her family and made the big move upstate. Wanda moved to Schenectady NY in 2022 with her son, daughter and grandson. Wanda enjoyed going to concerts, Broadway shows, taking trips, crocheting, shopping and spending time with her family.

Wanda is survived by her 2 younger sisters Sherrene and Leslye, Bonus Sister Tammy Mitchell, daughter Tanaya King (42), Her son Christopher King (32), daughter-in-law Myra King, Grandson Tristan William Burnette (15). She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and loving friends. Wanda's memory will live on forever in all of us, please celebrate her life and the love she gave.
