Wanda Nell Levacy was born Sept. 18, 1938 in Clovis to the home of Katy Bell (Thurman) and Jodie Gurley, and passed from this life at her home in Portales on Nov. 12, 2025. The Gurley family moved to Portales in 1946, and Wanda graduated from Portales High School in 1956. On July 14, 1956 she was married to Franklin Bartlett Levacy. For several years they made their home on a ranch west of Kenna. They moved to Portales in 1962 and settled southwest of Portales.
Wanda worked as a checker at Owens Food Market and later at Parkway Grocery. When her husband purchased the pump company where he was working, Wanda helped him in the running of the business. In addition, she began driving a school bus, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She retired from her working life in 2000.
Wanda worked in a supporting role with Little Wranglers when her boys were active. Later, in the early 2000's she established the Portales Winner Series rodeos for the local youth. Watching the rodeos while her children and grandchildren were competing was a constant source of enjoyment for her.
Her husband was very active in the local VFW, and Wanda was an active member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary. In addition, she enjoyed working at the VFW bar, and sometimes acted as a bouncer. She was an accomplished pool player, and played as long as she was physically able. Wanda loved to swim and taught all of her family to swim in her pool. She was very family oriented, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You were never in doubt as to her opinions, and at times could be rather ornery.
She is survived by her two sons, Dwayne and Theresa Levacy and Steve and Martha Levacy all of Portales; a daughter, Veronica Levacy of Portales; seven grandchildren, Frank and Montana Levacy, Millie German, Samantha Reynolds, Crystal and Ryan Cooke, Jahanna and Dustin Provencio, Tae Tabor and Julie Ann Tabor; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Dorthea Nicholes of Amarillo, TX and Ronda Gentry of Viejo, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Ricky, and three sisters, Dolly Meeks, Gracie Nix and Vita Bennett, as well as by her husband, Frank Levacy who died February 14, 2017 after more than 60 years of marriage.
