Wanda "Trina" Matt Owens, 57, of Beloit, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Autumn Lake Healthcare, Beloit, Wisconsin.
Trina was born on June 13, 1966, the daughter of Dorothy Mae (Grimes) Owens.
Trina graduated from Beloit Memorial High School. She was employed for several years in the Beloit School System as a custodian and then as a paraeducator, providing personal support to special needs and autistic children. Trina was a phenomenal basketball player and coached both middle school basketball and volleyball. She was devoted to her school children as she was to her mother. Trina became her mother's caretaker for several years. She was a self-taught home chef to be able to prepare meals for her mother and herself. Trina learned how to make her mother's renowned German Chocolate Cake. She shared her culinary skills with many who requested that she make them her: rotel dip, sloppy joes, meatballs, cookies, fudge, or cheesecake. A love language of food.
In her child rearing and teen years, Trina became saved, baptized, a dedicated member and attendee to the family home church of Community Baptist Church in South Beloit, Illinois under the leadership of Reverend D. W. Johnson and then Pastor Charles F. Hereford. She loved the Lord, and He was a constant in her life. Trina enjoyed listening on Saturday morning to the gospel and inspirational show hosted by her friend Brenda Jones Harper. She also enjoyed listening to gospel singer Lee Williams, her mother's favorite gospel artist. Trina's preferred spot to enjoy life from was sitting in her favorite see at The Alarm Box while hanging with her sisters (friends of 35 years), Karen Wymer, and Kathy Davis who were affectionally known as "the daughters and the sisters". When not at home it was also at The Alarm Box that Trina affectionally cheered, yelled, and enjoyed watching her Green Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. Trina was an adamant fan of both teams. Many will recall hearing her say "shhh, quiet, my team is playing." This was also the same sentiment that will be remembered when she was watching her soap operas.
Trina is survived by her siblings, Howard (Janice) Owens of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gary (Kathy) Owens of Rockton Township, Illinois, Rodney (Cathy) Owens of De Pere, Wisconsin, Nina Owens-Nichols of Trevor, Wisconsin, Rory Owens of Beloit, Wisconsin, Clarease Owens-Dozier, and Lamont Owens; her heartbeats which were her nephews and nieces; cousins; close friends, Tammy Hall, Julia Fleming-Edward, Misty House, JT Lindsey, Glenn Davis, Angela Allen, Chad Davis, Dennis Hasse, and Sean Madison; and a host of other friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, LueVennia DeBerry; "Momma" mother, Dorothy Mae Grimes-Owens; twin sisters, Terri Ann Owens, and Peggy Ann Bell.
Special thank you to Lossie Davis for the meals and cookies, talks, and constant support now and across the years, Eunicestine "Teen" Glass for her comfort and mashed potatoes, Yolanda M. Floyd, Toria Floyd and Terez McClendon, Bessie Pryor, Beloit Cancer Center, Beloit Memorial Hospital, Beloit Regional Hospice nurse Stephanie and the two aids that were Trina's last wish grantors, Autumn Lakes Healthcare administrator Sue Viken, assistant admissions Deann Anderson, and Reverend Robert L. Hearns Jr. for the family support and the service. Thank you all for the expressions of love, gifts, and visits during this period of Wanda "Trina's" journey. Thank you to all who were kind and cared for her in the hospital and during her hospice stay at Autumn Lakes. The family would lastly like to thank Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home.
A private committal service for family and close friends will be held at East Lawn Cemetery in Beloit, Wisconsin. Family and friends can pay their respects and leave condolences at a Repass beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Community Baptist Church, 1634 Center Street, South Beloit, Illinois 61080.
