Wanda F. Stumpe, 93, of
Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 3, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Wanda Faye Hubenthal was born on December 30, 1931, in Readsville, Missouri. Wanda's early years were spent in the communities of Mexico, Clarksville and Kirkwood. She attended Saint Peters Catholic School and later Holy Family Catholic School in Port Hudson until the 8th grade. Her sense of responsibility led her to enter the workforce early to help support her numerous younger siblings, showcasing her innate selflessness from a young age.
Wanda's heart found its match when she married Warren Stumpe on May 10, 1952. The couple's journey took them from Maryland Heights to Saint Ann, Missouri, where they lovingly raised their four children: Angela, Jill, Ursula, and Neal. During these years, Wanda was self-employed as a childcare provider and later managed Ladue Dry Cleaners. Her home was often a haven for relatives, with many younger siblings, nieces, and nephews finding a warm and welcoming place to stay while attending college or working in the Saint Louis area.
Wanda went back and pursued her education, achieving her GED at the age of 40. Early in life, Wanda took courses in floral arrangement and later created the arrangements for many family weddings. She loved flowers and plants, filling both the inside and outside of her home. Her fondness for nature extended to her gardening, where she took great pride in growing flowers, plants, and vegetables, as well as canning the produce, jellies, and jams she made.
Upon retirement, Wanda and Warren returned to the Stumpe Homestead in Japan, Missouri, where they immersed themselves in the life of their community. As active members of Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, they were staples at the Japan Picnic, often running the bingo station together. Wanda was the ultimate homemaker-everyone looked forward to her chicken and noodles and Texas Sheet Cakes. Her devotion to her faith was unwavering, with Holy Family Catholic Church being a central part of her life. Wanda was a devout Catholic who attended annual retreats with her sisters, and her faith was a guiding force in everything she did.
Her favorite holiday was Christmas, and she began decorating her home as early as November to ensure that each room reflected the true meaning of the season, celebrating the birth of Christ. Among her many collections, she cherished angels, crosses, Blessed Virgin statues, and Holy Family statues, all of which filled her home with symbols of her deep spirituality.
Wanda loved to travel alongside her family, whether it was to Florida, Nashville, or historic Washington D.C. Back on the farm, she and Warren raised cattle and grain crops, and she supported Warren and Neal's passion for tractor pull competitions. Estate sales, community dances, and the simple pleasure of a good bargain at Kohls were among her favorite pastimes.
Wanda was a classy lady through and through. She took great pride in her appearance, reflecting the grace and poise with which she approached life. Above all, Wanda's role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was one she cherished deeply.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's visits were the highlight of her days, filled with laughter, love, and cherished memories. Wanda was known for her delicious, homemade caramel corn, brownies, and her special Stumpe Punch. Her grandchildren affectionately gave her the nickname, "Bumpe."
Wanda's legacy of faith, love, and devotion will live on through her family, who were blessed to have such a wonderful woman as their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
