Wayne Webster Bastedo, a corporate attorney and devoted member of his community, passed away on February 15, 2024, at Pardee Hospital in Henderson County, North Carolina. He was born on July 13, 1948, in Nassau County, New York and moved to Hendersonville in the 1990's. Wayne was 75 years old at the time of his passing.
Wayne's career spanned several decades, during which he served as a corporate attorney for esteemed organizations such as Western Union and Exxon in NY and NJ. For a short time he operated as a sole practitioner under the name of Wainwright Tower. In his later years he also worked part time at local movie theaters in Hendersonville due to his interest in film.
Beyond his professional achievements, Wayne had a passion for arts and culture. He particularly enjoyed film and theater, and his creative writing talents were well-known amongst his circle of friends. Wayne actively participated in the Sammy Williams Senior Citizens Center Drama Group, where he shared his love for the dramatic arts.
In addition to his involvement in the arts, Wayne was politically engaged and believed in making a positive impact on society. He devoted much of his time to various political causes including running for North Carolina State House of Representatives in 2004, though he did not win, and remained committed to fostering change.
Wayne's academic accomplishments were equally noteworthy. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Princeton University, a Juris Doctor (JD) from Hofstra University School of Law, and a Master of Laws (LLM) from New York University School of Law. Wayne's dedication to education exemplified his thirst for knowledge and intellectual growth. In his retirement, he received an AA in Film & Video Production from Haywood Community College.
During his life, Wayne proudly served his country as a Lieutenant Junior Grade Communications Officer on the USS Enterprise from 1970 to 1975 in the United States Navy. His service in the military reinforced his sense of duty and instilled in him a profound respect for his fellow servicemen and women.
Wayne was a beloved member of the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he found solace and spiritual nourishment. His faith provided him with strength, guidance, and a sense of community throughout his life.
Wayne was preceded in death by his loving parents, Walter and Barbara Bastedo Jr. He is survived by his sister, Christine Bastedo Brunner and Richard of Olympia, WA, and their child, Skylar Brunner Bastedo of Beaverton, OR; his brother, Ralph W. Bastedo of Hendersonville, NC; and his significant other, Shelia Harper.
A memorial service and a graveside service to celebrate Wayne's life will be held in the spring, where family and friends will gather to pay tribute to his memory. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Wayne should be directed to Fletcher Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1141 Howard Gap Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28792-7262.
Wayne Webster Bastedo lived a life of purpose and left an indelible impact on those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy will continue to inspire, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of sharing in his journey.
