Wayne McCurry, age 84, of Lower Browns Creek, went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John Burgin and Lena Mae Gouge McCurry. He was preceded in death as well by a baby brother, Gary Dean McCurry, and a sister, Christine Wilson.
Wayne proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a rock mason all his life, as well as a tobacco farmer and loved gardening, and earned the title of Farmer of the Year in Yancey County. He was also a very avid bear hunter and houndsman. Wayne loved his family and friends, and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Surviving is his loving wife, Wilma McCurry, whom he happily made a life with for 39 years; two sons, Johnny Dean McCurry and Adam Burnette; a daughter, Jennie Burnette; best friend and honorary son and daughter-in-law, Justin Gurley and wife, Brittany; two granddaughters he referred to as "my girls": Christie Hughes and husband, Dakota, and Taylor Hoilman and husband, Jeremy; three great-granddaughters: Scarlett Hughes, and Paisley and Tilly Gurley, as well as his first great-grandson who is due in September; sister, Lavonia Buchanan; and two brothers, Tony McCurry and wife, Pat, and Wade McCurry and wife, Roselyn. He is also survived by many beloved friends, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22nd in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Service. Pastors Lee Cope and Todd Robinson will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V. The family will receive friends from 5 until 6 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
