Wayne Edward Patterson, 83 of Easton, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Wayne was born at home on November 14, 1941, in Mason City, Illinois to Gerald David and Esther Ellen (Shawgo) Patterson. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1959 and later earned a degree in Automotive Technology from Lincoln Land Community College. Wayne proudly served his country in the US Army from 1962 to 1964.
Wayne spent his career with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, working as Site Superintendent at the Conservation World on the Illinois State Fairgrounds and at Sandridge State Forest. After his retirement, he continued to work part time with the US Post Office.
On December 6, 1964, Wayne married the love of his life, Cheryl (Bortel), who survives him. Together they shared over 60 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and family. Wayne is also survived by his children, Michael of Springfield, Illinois, Kevin (Jan) of Phoenix, Arizona, Patricia (Rick) Price of Petersburg, Illinois, and Elizabeth, (Brian) Oberhausen of Birmingham, Alabama. He was a proud and devoted Papa to Tony Patterson, (Suzie Erwin), Levi Patterson, Amy Cetina, Matthew Price (Ellie Montgomery), Megan Price (Austin Gusewelle), Jake (Holly) Caughell and four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his siblings Elsie Mann, Doris Bagby, and Bob Patterson. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Marian.
Wayne had a deep love for life and an array of interests. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, playing guitar and singing, especially with The Menard County Singers. He also loved traveling and camping. One of his most beloved traditions was a spectacular Christmas light display. More than anything, he cherished time spent with family.
Throughout every challenge in life Wayne persevered with quiet dignity, never complaining. His resilience, humility and steady presence was a source of inspiration to those who knew him.
Wayne's life was a testament to hard work, kindness, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM on Thursday, July 10 at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, Illinois followed immediately by a funeral service at 11 AM. Graveside services will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Forest City, Illinois.
