His Story
DR. WAYNE EDWARD WHALEY, beloved husband, father, and son passed away on June 10, 2024, in
Gilbert, Arizona. He is survived by his devoted wife, Janice, son, Sean, siblings Ronald (Melva Jean), Kenneth (Jackie), Irene Bonville (Seward), Mary, Rita, nieces and nephews.
WAYNE EDWARD WHALEY was born on February 23, 1949, in
Lincoln, Delaware, to Irene and John Whaley, the greatest parents a child could be blessed with. On June 10, 1972, he married his sweetheart, Janice Evans. Their marriage was blessed with the gift of two amazing sons, Sean, and Dane.
Always determined to excel in school, Wayne graduated from William C. Jason High School and received degrees from Delaware State College (University), the University of Delaware, and Temple University. His pursuit of wisdom was driven by a desire to enlighten others, echoing Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (NIV)
In addition to his academic achievements, Wayne proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying the virtues of courage and discipline.
Dr. Whaley's passion for education led him to a career path as a dedicated educator in Delaware and Arizona. He served in many roles as an educator, including teacher, administrator, and department chair. He encouraged his students to engage in problem-based learning and peer collaboration.
Wayne's leadership extended into civic and professional spheres, serving on the boards of the Clarence Fraim Boys and Girls Club and Sanford School, and as a member of the Lions Club, to name a few. His dedication to community service reflected his commitment to charity and love. Dr. Whaley also authored two books; The Virtue of All Achievement is Victory Over One's Self, and Oneness, A Touch of Truth with a third currently being published.
Wayne was a reserved man, the patriarch of his family, with devout Christian faith and memberships at the Centennial United Methodist Church in
Smyrna, Delaware, and Living Word Bible Church in
Mesa, Arizona. His life was a testament to the virtues of unity, faith and courage, always exemplifying Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."(NIV)
As a "lawn enthusiast", he took pride in maintaining a beautiful home, reflecting his temperance and thankfulness for the blessings he received. He enjoyed traveling with his family both domestically and internationally, with trips to Mexico, France, and Jamaica. Motown, disco, and other music from the 1960s and 1970s could be heard filling any space he was in. Saturday afternoons were a time to reminisce about his love of Western movies, a passion held since childhood.
On June 10, 2024, the 52nd anniversary of his marriage to his beloved Janice, he was called to his heavenly home and reunited with his son Dane, his parents Irene and John, siblings including Della Ann, Alfred, Delbert, Sylvester, Lorraine, and the family dog Otto.
Wayne knew and embraced God's plan as stated in Proverbs 19:21 "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." (NIV). Tucked in his wallet was his favorite scripture: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." (Numbers 6:24-26, NIV)
The memories of DR. WAYNE EDWARD WHALEY will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, charity, and forgiveness, encouraging all to trust in God by "Watch(ing) out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully." (2 John 1:8, NIV)
