With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Weaver "Mike" Layfield, age 69, who departed this world peacefully at his home in Perry, Georgia, on May 1, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. Surrounded by his loving family, Mike left this world the same way he lived in it, with strength, dignity, and love.
Mike was the cherished husband of Julie Rabun Layfield for 50 years, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather. His legacy as a family man is marked by his quiet leadership, boundless generosity, and unconditional love.
Born in Taylor County, Georgia, and once a resident of Macon County in the City of Marshallville, Mike was the son of Weaver Layfield and Leona Harbuck Layfield. He grew up alongside his brother Larry Layfield, sharing countless childhood adventures, many of which featured his lifelong friend Maynard Williamson. Fondly remembered as "Chitlin," Mike spent his youth fishing at White Water Pond, racing from giant wasps in Maynard's 10-foot Jon boat powered by Mike's 6-horse Johnson motor.
Mike graduated from Macon County High School in 1973. He was an active member of the FFA, where his determination was evident even then, winning a prized.22 rifle through a magazine fundraiser, riding the handlebars of Maynard's bike as they sold door-to-door. As a teenager, he also played bass in a local band of friends called "Flint."
Professionally, Mike spent over 25 years at Blue Bird Corporation, working his way up from mechanic to Manager of Field Service. His tenure at Blue Bird was marked by dedication, leadership, and technical mastery. Prior to Blue Bird, he owned and operated a mechanic shop on Main Street in Marshallville, an establishment known not only for fixing engines but also for impromptu quail hunts out back. Mike was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and friends, often in exchange for nothing more than a handshake and perhaps access to hunting grounds. After retirement, he continued to share his expertise in various supervisory roles.
Mike was a true outdoorsman and found joy in hunting, fishing, camping, and passing along family traditions to the next generation. One of his proudest achievements came in 1997 when he harvested a white-tailed buck that earned the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association's award for top deer taken by firearms, with a Boone & Crockett score of 178 5/8, which was the highest in the state since 1986.
He is survived by his beloved wife Julie, and their children: Amber (Travis) Streetman of Elko, Jonathan (Mandi) Layfield of Marshallville, and Blake (Bailie) Layfield of Perry. He was the proud "PopPop" to his grandchildren: Emma and Lily Streetman; Taylor and Jacob Layfield; and Lynlee, Clayson, and Ryleigh Layfield. He is also survived by a large extended family and countless cherished friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness, humor, and generous spirit.
Mike was more than just the cornerstone of our family, he was our patriarch, our steady guide, and the heart of every gathering. He had a way of weaving wisdom into every conversation, offering advice that was as practical as it was profound, often shared with a twinkle in his eye and a well-timed joke that could lighten even the heaviest moments. He was a man of integrity and humility. He could fix anything with an engine and never backed down from a challenge. He led by example, teaching his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, respect, and perseverance. Whether it was through his playful jingles, wise advice, or "fish on!" calls from the riverbank, his presence brought warmth and laughter to those around him. Through his unwavering strength, endless wisdom, and quiet generosity, he built a legacy rooted in love, resilience, and unity. In his presence, you always found a listening ear, a steady hand, and a spirit that made everyone feel valued and at home. His leadership in our family was not loud or demanding; it was strong, constant, and filled with love. His life was a testament to the power of family, and the bonds he nurtured will continue to grow for generations to come.
He will be deeply missed, not only for the roles he held, but for the man he was; steadfast, generous, wise, and always ready with a story or a smile.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 2:30 pm at Church in the Park in Perry, Georgia. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. The family will receive visitors at his home, 102 Brittany Drive, Perry, GA 31069, in the days leading up to the service.
