Visitation for Jim will be 5:00-6:00 pm Friday, September 27, 2024, at Stevenson Funeral Home with a Rosary and Vigil service being held at 6:00pm.
Jim passed away September 19th at his home in Dickinson with family holding his hand and by his side.
Wencel was born March 10, 1930 on the farm in Versippi, ND, the son of Anton and Emelie (Kostelecky) Splichal. Jim was united in marriage to Mary Ann Kostelecky on September 24, 1951 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of New Hradec. To this union, Nancy, Randy, Richard, Pamela and Jayme were born. Jim and Mary farmed for a few years in Stark County (Versippi) and Jim worked for 10 years at Husky Briquetting Plant in Dickinson before he went to work as a Shop Foreman for Diamond Equipment in Williston. They moved back to Dickinson and opened Dakota Rubber Stamp, eventually selling the business and retiring. Jim was a member of St. Anthony’s Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher.
To know him was to love him. Even if you were a complete stranger, you fell in love with this charismatic man. He lived life to the fullest. He loved his wife and family fiercely, playing his polka music cassettes and CD’s (loudly. everywhere), his birds and dogs over the years, playing dice and cards and pool and darts, kohlrabi and a good beer, coloring, woodworking, volunteering at church functions and with Amen Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels, playing his piano, dancing, going for walks, and being ornery and wonderful. He always had to know what you were doing and why you were doing it “that way”. He spent the last 7 years traveling from kid to kid, spending as much treasured time with everyone as he could. He will be so deeply missed, but we were all so lucky to have him as long as we did. He passed knowing his kids all came to spend time and his grandkids and great-grandkids FaceTimed and text him one final time.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Nancy (Anton) Dukart of Dickinson and Pamela (Michael) Olson of Fargo and his sons, Randy (Theresa), Splichal of Larimore, Richard (Sheri) Splichal of Spokane, WA, and Jayme (Lonnie) Splichal of Nine Mile Falls, WA; 12 grandchildren, Kyle (Jennifer) Dukart, Sarah “Seri” Dukart, Jessica (Jesse) Gravdahl, Eric Adams, James (Sher) Olson, Matthew (Rohini) Olson, Gabe (Amanda) Olson, Marisa (Nate) Hasenoehrl, Connor (Taylor) Splichal, Savanah, Colby and Jacob Splichal; 14 great-grandchildren, Alexander, Henry, Julianna, Oliver, Theodore, Jack, Cate, Claire, Charlie, Hank, Lola, Hattie, Ishaan, and Finnick; one sister, Agnes Wandler of New England.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Emilie Splichal; brothers and spouses, Joe (Christine), Tony (Mary), Vincent (Dorothy), George (Catherine) and Steve (Edith); sisters and spouses, Mary (Robert) Wolberg; Emma (Dick) Sadowsky of Dickinson, Dorothy (Robert) Ficek of Dickinson, and Lillian (Vern) Dobitz of Billings, MT, and brother-in-law Joe Wandler.
