Wendell Wright, a devoted father, veteran, and dedicated professional, passed away on February 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and service. He was a man of great counsel, humor, and resilience who touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity.
Born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on February 23, 1960, Wendell graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1978. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue multiple academic achievements, including a Diploma in Basic Computer Programming from International Correspondence Schools in Pennsylvania (1988), an Associate in Arts degree from the University of Maryland University College (1995), a Bachelor of General Studies degree from William Carey College (2001), and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University's School of Business and Technology (2003). He continued to expand his expertise, earning multiple certificates throughout his lifetime.
Wendell served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1981 to 1987 and later in the Air Force Reserves from 1997 to 1998, dedicating a total of eight years to military service. His outstanding performance was recognized with a Sustained Superior Performance Award in 1993 from the Department of the Air Force.
He was a dedicated father to his three children, Byron Paige Wright (1986), Brittni Lynn Wright (1996), and Bethany Laine Wright (1996). Wendell was a strong and loving father who encouraged his children to strive for excellence and never give up on their dreams. He cherished his role as a grandfather, forming a special bond with his grandchildren, Jaydon Wright, Christian Wright, and Rylee Wright.
Wendell was one of eight children and is survived by his two sisters and five brothers. Among his greatest loves was his mother, Gladys Wright, whom he held in the highest regard. His deep admiration for her was evident throughout his life.
Wendell's career in contracting, particularly with the Department of Defense, was marked by diligence and commitment. His work reflected his strong sense of duty and integrity.
A man of faith, Wendell was raised in the Baptist tradition and maintained a relationship with the Triune God throughout his life. In his final days, he deepened his spiritual focus and trust in God's guidance.
He was a passionate fan of the Dallas Cowboys and had a deep appreciation for music, particularly The Temptations and Otis Redding. His favorite color was believed to be blue. Wendell also enjoyed watching television shows such as Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, and Roots.
He will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, wise counsel, and unwavering love for his family. Though he pushed his children to excel, it was always with the best intentions, ensuring they had every opportunity for success. His pride softened into humility and gentleness over time, and while he may have been misunderstood at times, his kindness and selflessness were undeniable. A true neighbor and friend, he often placed the needs of others ahead of his own without seeking recognition.
