Wesley Depriest Mitchell, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and beloved member of his community, passed away on September 2, 2024, at the age of 72 at his home in Lockhart, Texas. Born on April 7, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, Wesley lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the ones he loved.
Wesley's early life was rooted in the rich soils of Hallettsville, Texas, where he learned the value of hard work amidst the cotton fields as part of one of the last sharecropper farming families in the state. This formative experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for the land and its history.
Wesley was a graduate of GW Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, Texas, class of 1970. He attended St. Phillips College to further his education, however his burning desire to see the world took him in another direction. He joined the US Army In 1973, where he served his country with pride and honor while stationed at the Presidio Military Base in San Francisco, California. It was the first time he'd seen the Pacific Ocean, and he fell in love with the West Coast instantly. During his military service, he met his soul mate coincidentally while traveling back from his basic training. Their love story began in Texas and led to a marriage in 1975 that would span nearly five decades, filled with joy and partnership.
Wesley was a man of many talents and interests. He was a die-hard track and field fan, and was a beloved coach and mentor to many in the sport. He could repair anything in your house, do your taxes, and then cook a nice dinner. His mind was like a computer, remembering even the smallest details. He was a lifelong learner, and never missed an opportunity to share what he'd learned with others around him. He prided himself on being a helping hand to others, even if it meant spending his last dollar to do it. His love for blues and oldies music echoed through the walls of his home, creating a soundtrack for the countless cherished moments spent with his family. He reveled in spending quality time with his family and cherished every moment with his grandchildren, whether it was sharing stories, imparting wisdom, or simply enjoying their company. His love for driving down the back roads was more than a pastime; it was a way to connect with the land he so loved and to find peace in the simple pleasures of life. Wesley's wanderlust also took him to the west coast, where he enjoyed traveling and revisiting the places that held special memories for him and Pamela. These trips were not just vacations but journeys that enriched his soul and strengthened the bonds with his family.
Wesley was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, community volunteer, and role model for young men. He was a man who loved deeply and who was deeply loved. Wesley Depriest Mitchell's journey on this earth has come to a close, but his story will continue to be told through the lives of those he loved and the many people he inspired. His memory will be cherished, his teachings will be honored, and his spirit will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends. We bid farewell to a remarkable man, whose life was a testament to the power of kindness and the beauty of a soul well-lived.
