Willard Gus Schuhmann, Jr, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024 in
Atlanta, Texas, at the age of 88. He was born on September 2, 1935, in
Bloomburg, Texas, delivered by his grandfather, Dr. J. I. Allen.
Gus is survived by his wife, Donna Schuhmann; two children, Stephen Schuhmann (Cindy) and Keri Schuhmann Lee and son-in-law, Drew Cable, along with his grandchildren: Josh Brosin (Holly), Caleb Brosin (Olivia), Kelsea Schuhmann Haas (Tyler), Jake Schuhmann (Kati), Alex Weaver (Jonny), and great-grandchildren: Addie Gail Haas, Rhett Haas, Riley Weaver, Hunter Weaver, Cooper Brosin, and Baker Schuhmann. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Norine Schuhmann, daughter Karen Schuhmann Cable and grandson John Tyler Lee.
A native of
Bloomburg, Texas and long-term resident of
Atlanta, Texas, Gus graduated from Bloomburg High School and later earned his education degree from Howard Payne University. He dedicated his career to education, serving as Principal or Assistant Principal at Flat High School, Atlanta Junior High School, Atlanta High School, and Atlanta Primary School. If you grew up in Atlanta, Gus was either your bus driver, teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal or boss, and maybe the same for your children and grandchildren. Gus was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Independent School District and received the District's Distinguished Service Award in 2017.
Gus was also an Eagle Scout and dedicated Scoutmaster, instilling values of leadership and service in countless young individuals. He was an active member of the Atlanta Rotary Club, embodying the spirit of community service. Gus was also a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, where his faith and compassion touched the lives of many.
Outside of his professional and community involvements, Gus had a passion for Atlanta Rabbits football. He loved filming Rabbits football games and following every season. During his last years at Wesley House, he was known as Mr Rabbit, a title that delighted him to no end. Never shy to tell you what he thought, Gus loved his country, always honoring his country and its values.
Gus will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, dedication to education, love for his family, community service, and his commitment to his faith. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sat, April 27, 2024 at First Baptist Church Atlanta. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 with a service to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Atlanta Education Foundation in honor of his memory.
Gus's family would like to thank the Atlanta Wesley House, their staff and our wonderful sitters that lovingly cared for Gus in recent years. He thought he was at a "free" resort until the day he passed. For this, his family is forever grateful.
