William Harvey Akins

William "Bud" Harvey Akins Sr., a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at his home in Blairsville, Georgia. He lived a vibrant and fulfilling 87 years, leaving behind a legacy marked by love, community service, and a passion for life. He raised his family with strong Christian faith.

Born on March 20, 1938, Bud was a proud Army veteran who carried the values of service and sacrifice throughout his life. He had a curious spirit and an insatiable appetite for adventure, enjoying numerous activities such as fishing, golfing, tennis, woodworking, and skiing. He was never one to sit still, and encouraged his family to do the same. He could often be found gathering family and friends around the grill to share delicious meals and even better stories.

Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Akins; daughter, Angela Lynn Akins Turner; mother, Fannie Rogers; and sister, Bonita Weaver.

Bud's most treasured moments were spent with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Carol; children: daughter Kim (Mike) Loccisano; son William H. (Jan) Akins Jr.; and son-in-law, Dr. John Mark Turner. He is also survived by his sister, Vivian Groves, and a thriving group of grandchildren: Trey Ryan, Tyler Akins, Amelia Turner, Isabella Loccisano, and Michaela Loccisano, as well as great-grandchildren Juliet Akins, Lyla Ryan, and Remy Ryan. His family was the center of his world, and his role as a storyteller was legendary; he brought laughter and warmth to every gathering with his tales.

A dedicated member of the community, Bud's spirit of service was evident in his involvement as former president of the Union County Historical Society and his commitment to the Masonic Lodge. He loved sharing his passion for local history and culture with those around him. Bud was also a loyal supporter of the Braves and a proud fan of Georgia Tech, relishing in the camaraderie that sports brought to his life.

As a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County, Bud's faith guided his actions and shaped his character, serving as a beacon of hope and kindness to many. He spent his first career with the Department of Transportation, where his work helped contribute to the infrastructure of the community he loved, and he couldn't stay retired, so he worked a second career with Colwell Construction.

Funeral services for William "Bud" Harvey Akins will be held on May 24, 2025. A public viewing will take place on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cochran McDaniel Funeral Home Blairsville Chapel. The funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 24, at First United Methodist Church of Union County with burial following at Union Memory Gardens. Military honors will be presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers; Michael Cash, Trey Ryan, Tyler Akins, Aaron Hura, Tim Weaver, and Dr. John Mark Turner. The following will serve as Honorary Pallbearers; Hoyt Raper, Jim McAfee, Lamar Paris, Roy Hamby, and Curtis Colwell.
