William Louis Bacon, born December 3, 1935, in Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was the oldest of 7 children born to William and Louise Bacon. William was a brilliant man, who devoted his life to both healing and educating. As a Ford Foundation Scholar, he attended Morehouse College at the age of 15 and graduated in 1956 at the age of 19. He then pursued a medical degree from Meharry Medical College, embarking on a career as an Orthopedic Surgeon, distinguished by his unwavering commitment to excellence.

William was a proud veteran, having served with distinction and obtaining the rank of Colonel in the US Army. During his years of military service, William held the position of Chief of Surgery at several army hospitals, including the US Army Hospital in Okinawa. He also served as the Course Director at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. His deep knowledge and commitment to the service of others made him a talented educator of young surgeons. Among his several commendations are the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the French Services Legion of Merit for his medical assistance to French soldiers during the Persian Gulf War.

After leaving active duty, William's reputation made him a sought-after surgeon who served as the Chair of Surgery at several South Florida hospitals. In addition to his medical practice, he continued his commitment to education and mentorship as a professor in orthopedic surgery, including many years at the University of Miami Medical School and later, quite proudly, at his alma mater, Meharry Medical College.

Beyond his professional achievements, William was an avid golfer, fisherman and story-teller. He found joy and relaxation in these hobbies, often sharing his love for the outdoors and conversation with family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna, and his children: Tyra, Donna, Mary, Jesse, Louise, Jonathan, and Nicholas as well as his grandchildren: Bryce, Tierra, Kaya, Ajani, Kaleb, Sotiri, Amina and Amir. He was predeceased by his son, William II whom he cherished.

William's life was a testament to excellence and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but he leaves a tremendous legacy and will live on through his children, whom he inspired to both academic and professional success.

A celebration of William's life will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation at 2500 Clairmont Rd, Atlanta, GA.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
