William "Bill" Charles Baird, 70, passed away on September 4, 2025 at his home in Yorkville, IL. Bill was born August 7, 1955 in Elgin, IL. He grew up on Adrian Street in Yorkville, where he and the neighbor boys would cross the creek and Spear Valley to battle against the Fisher boys and the rest of the Elizabeth Street gang. He loved fast cars and motorcycles, and could be found weekends at Oswego Drag Raceway or racing in motocross events. He went to work as a welder for Caterpillar tractor company after graduating from Yorkville High School.
Bill bled Caterpillar yellow and dedicated his life to the company, moving up the corporate ladder to become a Fabrication Manager, living for four years in Russia and two years in China as plants were being built. He retired from Caterpillar after four decades of service.
In April 1996, Bill, a confirmed bachelor, met his future wife, Tamara. After conversing online for a time, Bill flew to California to meet Tamara and her daughter Olga. A swift courtship led to marriage and soon after, the birth of a second girl, Sonia. Bill loved the girls unconditionally and like to say he had to take car of his "three" girls.
Over the years, Bill and his family traveled to dozens of countries around the world, making friends along the way. Bill had the gift for gab and loved to tell stories. He was the type of person you turned to when you needed help to get a job done and he always remembered who his friends were.
After returning from Russia, Bill and his family had the good fortune of moving to Kingsmill Street, where neighbors are also friends.
Bill suffered for years with health issues, and finally decided to meet death on his terms, opting for hospice care instead of continuing with the seemingly endless hospital stays that prolonged the inevitable.
Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Dan; his parents, Charles and Nancy Baird; and his beloved dog, Coco. He is survived by his wife, Tamara, his daughters, Olga (Eric) Kampmeier and Sonia (Chris) Butts; his grandsons, Maksim Wietecha and Barrett Kampmeier; his sister, Penny (Martin) Falcon; and two fur babies Molly and Layla.
Private services will be held.
