William W. Bowie, III – Obituary
William Winans Bowie, III, affectionately known as Billy, was born to Karol Bowie-Curtis and Alan Horton Bowie, Sr. in New Haven, Connecticut on March 7, 1984. Billy was a bright and energetic child and always made friends wherever he went. He attended elementary school at Edgewood Magnet and Cold Spring schools. For middle school, Billy attended the Elm City New School. Billy attended Wilbur Cross High School where he was an exceptional athlete on the Soccer and Lacrosse teams and served as Treasurer for the Class of 2002.
Following high school, Billy was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Connecticut where his love of helping others led him to pursue a degree in Nursing. Billy also attended Gateway Community College to further his Nursing studies while also working as an Environmental Services Associate at Yale New Haven Hospital. In 2005, Billy was involved in a life-changing accident, which rendered him quadriplegic and vent dependent. Despite this accident affecting him physically, Billy never complained or lost his beautiful mind and love for helping others and seeing them happy. Billy and his mother would always say that it was important to make lemonade when life gives you lemons. After his accident, Billy started several businesses, helped to inspire and uplift others, wrote a book titled A Patient's Patience himself using his laptop and equipment powered by his mouth, and was studying Psychology at the Grand Canyon University where he maintained straight A's at the time he transitioned.
Billy is survived by his loving mother Karol Bowie Curtis and stepfather James Levey, his grandmother Mary Whiting, his stepmother, Patricia Parker, his uncles Walter (Angie) Byrd and William Bowie, his aunts Robin (Jesse) Harris, Stephannie (Rodney) Whiting, Cleo (Michael) Peterson, Twyla Whiting, his sister Tisa Liles, his brothers Joseph Penn, Thomas Walker, James Curtis, Alan H. Bowie, Jr., and Brandon (Taneisha) Curtis and his best friend Bradley Fleming. He was predeceased by his father Alan H. Bowie, Sr., his grandmothers Carolyn Whiting and Elsie Violet Bowie, his grandfathers Robert Whiting and William Winans Bowie, Jr., his uncle Keith Whiting and his aunt Carol Giles and a host of other extended family members and friends.
Billy's family would like to extend a special thank you to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Barbara Pearce, all of the nurses who were involved in Billy's 20-year miracle journey, the Yale New Haven Hospital, Gaylord Hospital, Hospital for Special Care, AAA Nursing Care, and Hospital of Central Connecticut.
