CARPENTER
William Lewis Carpenter Jr., 77, of Columbus and formerly South Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Grant Medical Center.
Born on March 18, 1948, in Madison County, he dedicated many years of his life to serving others, working as a corrections officer at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was respected by colleagues and known for his steady presence and strong sense of duty.
A proud member of the American Legion, William held deep appreciation for the friendships he made there. In his free time, he found joy in classic cars – whether attending local shows, tinkering in the garage, or simply admiring the craftsmanship of the cars he loved.
Above all, William will be remembered for his gentle humor, unforgettable laughter, and the love he shared with family and friends. He is survived by his children: Michael (Tracie) Carpenter, Marlena (Brian L.) Spangler, Kelly Carpenter, Lorain Stephens, and Shawn Carpenter; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Renda Stouffer; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Lewis Carpenter Sr. and Gertrude (Lloyd) Carpenter, beloved wife Debra (Mertins) Carpenter, and several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM in the EBERLE-FISHER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 103 North Main Street, London, with Reverend Jim Blankenship officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, London. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the time of services.
