William Edward Destross, age 82, went home to be with the Lord February 19, 2026.He passed peacefully, holding the hand of his loving wife, Diane, and was surrounded by family and love.

He is survived by his wife Diane, children Denice (Steve) Schomer, David Destross, Mona (Randy) Wade, Monique (James Gromer),siblings Bob (Drena) Destross, Christine Mussnig, nine grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his grandson Brandon Schomer and his former wife Shirley Mackey.

Bill was born on January 11, 1944 to Clayton and Mildred Destross in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Bill attended Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores. His 45-year career at Black & Decker DeWalt began as a clerk, advancing to manager, reflecting commitment and character. He was the devoted husband to wife Diane for 42 years. They met in 1983, and after their very first date, saw each other every single day until they married.

A quiet, gentle soul with a warm sense of humor, he was known for his kindness and steady presence. Though never the loudest person in the room, his wit and subtle jokes brought smiles to those lucky enough to know him. He had a special way of making people feel comfortable and welcomed.

Lake St. Clair was always home—he was born, raised and lived most of his life surrounded by its beauty. An avid fisherman, he loved spending peaceful hours on his fishing boat, with brother Bob and friends. He took pleasure in watching boats and passing freighters, and he never lost his appreciation for life along the water.

He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures — a good fish fry with friends, a game of pool, and playing his guitar and banjo. He found great happiness when sharing his favorite selections of music at family gatherings and parties, filling the room with songs that brought everyone together. He never missed a chance to enjoy a good meal surrounded by people he loved. Above all, he treasured his family, laughter around the table, and time spent with his many grandchildren, which brought him his greatest joy. Being surrounded by those he loved most meant everything to him, and his quiet pride in his family was always evident.

He will be remembered for his gentle heart, his humor, and the calm, loving presence he brought into every room. His legacy lives on through the memories he created, the music he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A Celebration of Life is planned for May; details to follow.
