Cremation SourceSuzanne ‘Sue’ Scherbarth, age 89, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away peacefully at Hampton Manor on February 21 surrounded by members of her loving family.
Born on October 9, 1936, in Ionia, Michigan, Sue was the beloved daughter of the late Leland and Edna Hillis. She was raised with strong values of faith, family, and hard work—principles that guided her entire life.
In 1955, Sue met Earl, the man who would become her lifelong partner, at Grace Lutheran Church in Redford. Their connection was immediate, and they married in 1957. Together, they shared 68 years of marriage marked by deep love, laughter, faith, and devotion. Their union was blessed with three children: Douglas E. Scherbarth, Jr. (Lynne), Catherine (Bill) Wrobel, and Diane (Rich) Smith.
Sue graduated from Redford Union High School and went on to study at Wayne State University. In high school she had a group of friends who would eventually be known as the Sewing Circle, but who mom always called ‘Club’. This friendship continued for the rest of her life with meetings and dinners.
Prior to her marriage, Sue taught at the School for the Blind and later learned to transcribe books into Braille. She inspired others to join her in this endeavor. Sue was a prolific quilter making quilts for relief agencies, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She gifted quilts to others when she saw a need. Sue sewed for the church also, participating in making vestments, paraments, quilts and banners.
Throughout her 89 years Sue worked and volunteered in many capacities. A docent at Greenfield Village, Livonia Library Gift Shop, Kid’s Hope USA as a relationship mentor and at Holy Cross Lutheran Church as part of the Altar Guild and with the Hearts, Hands and Voices summer program.
Sue had a passion for spreading ‘Joy’. Not just a word but something to spread to everyone she met. She truly took joy in all aspects of life. One of her greatest joys was the Yellow 1965 Mustang that Earl restored for her and that she held title to. She often said ‘hi’ to her beloved Mustang.
One of Sue ‘s fondest memories was the celebration of her and Earl’s 50th wedding anniversary with a cruise to Bermuda, joined by their entire family. The trip was a highlight of her later years—a joyful gathering full of laughter, stories, and cherished moments that became lifelong memories for all.
Sue was a proud and loving grandmother to Bethany (Marc), Andrew (Jennifer), Suzanne (Rory), Heidi (Blair), Kristin (Garth), Haley (Mike), Eric (Stephanie), Mallory, and Benjamin (Emily). She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Verity, Marius, Kaylin, Abby, Perseus, and Clement—each one a special light in her life.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, parents and her brother Bill Hillis.
Sue will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a kind, hardworking, and loyal woman who cared deeply for her family and those around her. Her legacy lives on through the family whom she loved, the work she took pride in, and the many lives she touched along the way.
A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday February 27, 2026, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 30650 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Sue’s family will receive visitors at the church from 10:30 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. A Memorial Luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the Church. Those who wish to honor Sue’s memory may do so with a contribution to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a community that was especially close to her heart.
