William George (Bill) Douglass, 98, of Youngsville, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
Bill was born on May 4, 1927 in Baltimore MD. Bill attended Sparrows Point High School and excelled as a starting pitcher for their baseball team and played semi-pro ball in the area. Upon graduation, Bill joined the Navy at 17, primarily as a medical corpsman on the USS Princeton Aircraft Carrier during the last years of WW2.
Bill married Janice Gulliver January 1948, and they had their first child (Billy) later that year. They went on to have two more sons, Tom and Matt. Bill had a 35-year career as a cost accountant for Bethlehem Steel, in Baltimore and was noted for his acumen with numbers.
Shortly after retirement they settled in Youngsville, NC in 1986, where he and Janice happily lived the rest of their lives. Bill was a golfer for many years, and over time, recorded 3 holes in one. He enjoyed the company of his family, friends and the community in Youngsville, and was loved especially by his neighbors.
A fan of big band/40's music, he will also be remembered for his love for all things baseball, his sense of humor, and his affection and devotion to his grandchildren, known to them as 'Grumps and Pop-Pop' His 98-year longevity was admired and attributed to his ability to persevere during the tough times and enjoy and appreciate the good times. Bill was one of a kind, a legend, and his passing is the end of an era.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years Janice Douglass (Gulliver); sons: Bill Douglass, Tom Douglass; parents: William L and Florence Douglass; and sister: Barbara Manning.
He is survived by his son: Matt Douglass; grandchildren: Sarah Douglass, Rachel DuBose, Adrianne Douglass, Rebecca Winfield, Abby Douglass, Jake Douglass, Jenna Douglass; daughter in law: Susen Douglass; stepdaughter in law: Eileen Douglass; and nine great grandchildren: Otto, Andrew, Dylan, Noah, Will, Colby, Charlotte, Grayson, and Jeremiah.
