Joseph Francis Mitchell III, a cherished soul whose zest for life and devotion to his family left an indelible mark on all who knew him, passed away on November 21, 2025, in Raleigh, NC. Born on January 20, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Joseph's journey was one of passion, service, and unyielding love. His legacy is a testament to a life well-lived, filled with laughter, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to his country and community.

A former Marine and Aviation Officer at USMC Cherry Point, NC, Joseph served his nation with honor and distinction from 1954 to 1956. His sense of duty was a cornerstone of his character, a trait that he carried into his subsequent career as a Field Engineer at IBM, where he dedicated 35 years before retiring in 1991. Joseph's work ethic and innovative spirit were not just evident in his professional life but also shone through in his personal passions. A lifetime train enthusiast, he was an esteemed member of the Train Collectors Association, where he once led as president. His love for Lionel trains extended beyond mere collection; through J&M Enterprises, he shared his expertise by buying, repairing, and selling these cherished pieces of Americana.

Beyond his professional and hobbyist endeavors, Joseph was a man who deeply valued physical fitness and the joy of dance. In the 1990s, he discovered a love for line dancing, a pastime that brought him both enjoyment and community. His patriotism never waned, as evidenced by his membership in a local Marine group, where he found camaraderie and fellowship among fellow servicemen at their regular Bojangles meet-ups.

Joseph's love for his family knew no bounds.

Predeceased by his parents, Joseph Mitchell Jr. and Katherine Kreiss Mitchell, and his stepmother, Margaret Mitchell.

He is survived by his loving wife, Josephine Mitchell, with whom he built a beautiful life. His children, Sheila (Marty) Gooch, Cheryl Mitchell Loeffel, and Kenneth Joseph (Christi) Mitchell, will forever cherish the lessons and love he imparted. His grandchildren, Damian Joseph Ganoe, Devin Ganoe, Katherine Loeffel, Joseph Mitchell, Jesse Barnett, and Lacy Barnett, as well as his Great grandson, Eli Mangum, will continue to be inspired by his memory.

Joseph was a fabulous father, husband, and provider. He was a role model who approached life's challenges with the heart of a problem solver and the hands of a jack of all trades. Whether he was tinkering as a mechanic, building as a carpenter, wiring as an electrician, or advising as a financial wizard, Joseph did it all with a smile and a clever quip. His fabulous sense of humor and quick wit brought sunshine to everyone he met, making the world a brighter place for his presence.

Described by those who knew him as funny, intelligent, and handy, Joseph's legacy is one of joy, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in every facet of his life. He will be profoundly missed, yet his influence will continue to resonate through the lives he touched, the community he served, and the family he so deeply loved. Joseph Francis Mitchell III's story is one of a life abundantly filled with purpose, laughter, and love, a narrative that will be recounted and celebrated for generations to come.
