Celebration of Life
It is with a sad heart that we share that William (Bill) H. Elliott, Jr. passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on October 25, 2025 at the age of 89 after a long full life. Maureen, his loving wife of 63 years, his family, his friends of the Town of Freedom, and his friends and colleagues up and down the Eastern seaboard mourn him.
We invite you to say a prayer for Bill in Heaven, where we are sure he is making friends, telling a joke or two and asking what someone's t-shirt says or being curious about the writing on the hat you're wearing. He was without a doubt, the official, unofficial "Mayor" of the town of Freedom, NH making friends and shedding a tear or two with the community in his daily rounds about town.
Born in Newton, MA, in "The Alley" in 1935, he was the eldest of seven children. He began working in the Hardware industry after high school and excelled in his career. He became the youngest designated AHC, Accredited Hardware Consultant in 1961, at age 25. He taught for 20 years in the Door and Hardware industry's education program, in his element sharing his knowledge with newcomers to the industry. He was ultimately elected to be the President of the Door and Hardware Institute of USA and Canada in 2002, and he continued working from home into his 80's.
He met Maureen in Templeton, NH on a ski trip with his sister and they soon married and made their home in South Weymouth, MA. They would go on to vacation in Tamworth, NH at White Lake State Park then they made their way to living in Freedom Village full time, known for his knack of connecting to people of all ages.
Bill was always active; a golfer, snow skier, tennis player, ping pong player and home vegetable gardener. His lifelong sport was as an ice hockey player, a tough-as-nails defense man which he enjoyed playing in Hingham until his 70's. He and Maureen were very lucky to have traveled around the world extensively all over Europe and they visited Hawaii six times.
He was voted Grand Marshall of the 123rd Freedom Old Home Week in 2022 with his wife Maureen. Bill was an active volunteer at the Freedom Food Pantry, on the Freedom Town Planning Board, the Community Club, The Village Store and the Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife Maureen (Helfrich) Elliott from Quincy, MA, their four children, Catherine (Kate) Elliott of Conway, NH, William (Billy) Elliott III, Kevin Elliott and Beth Elliott. Their grandchildren, Jenna Elliott and her husband Sean, Matthew Elliott and his wife Leigha, Sarah Elliott, Abigail (Abby) Elliott, and two great grand-daughters Brooklyn and Taylor. He leaves behind his sisters Mary Sandretzy, Barbara Russo, Carol Tennant and Janice Elliott and his brother James (Jim) Elliott. He was predeceased by his sister Charlotte, and his grandson Josh and Josh's mom, Karen.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at the First Church of Freedom at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the Freedom Town Hall.
Any memorandums may be made in memory of Bill would be greatly appreciated by the Freedom Food Pantry, PO Box 502, Freedom, NH 03836 or the Visiting Nurses Home Care & Hospice of Carroll County, PO Box 432, North Conway, NH 03860.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you has been a very important word to him. And we know he would like to make sure to say "Thank you" to all of the people he loved and made a difference in his life.
