William Robert "Bob" Epstein, 86 years old, passed away Friday, August 2nd at Sentara Leigh Hospital, a matter of days following his 66th wedding anniversary to Mary Lou, the love and light of his life. Born February 4, 1938, in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Claudia and Jacob Epstein. Bob grew up in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Maury High School in 1955. He attended and graduated from the Norfolk Division of William and Mary, now Old Dominion University in 1965. He was on the track team and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
After college, Bob became a Certified Public Accountant and worked in public accounting, financial management, and banking. He served as Vice President of Mutual Federal Savings and Loan for many years.
Bob was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and served on the Finance Council. He was also very involved with The Knights of Columbus Council 367, and a member of The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly 1162. He served as Grand Knight from 2001-2002. You could often find him working the fish fry on Friday nights and the pancake breakfast on Sunday mornings.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a friend to many but it was his wife and children that he cherished most. He was predeceased by his oldest son, William Christopher (Chris) Epstein, and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Lou; daughters Shelia Epstein Hudgins (Franklin), Susan Epstein McFadden (Joseph); sons Phillip Gregory (Dana), Douglas Brian (April), Jack Todd (Lauren); eight grandchildren: Christopher (Olivia) and Morgan Hudgins; Thomas, Riley, and Callen McFadden; Stella Epstein; Megan Eaton and Mark Litton; and four great grandchildren: Cameron, London, Silas, and Mia.
The funeral will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 6400 Newport Avenue in Norfolk on Monday August 12, at 10:30am, with a reception immediately following in the church fellowship hall. Private burial following reception. Online condolences may be offered to the family at hdoliver.com.
