William Haden Obituary

William R. "Bill" Haden passed away on March 15, 2025, at Providence Newberg Medical Center at the age of 82. Born in Beckley, W.Va. on April 29, 1942, to the late J. Richard and Alma Jo Haden, he lived a life filled with dedication to higher education and to his church community, traveling the world, reading, classical music, and baseball. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and is survived by the children from his first marriage, daughter, Laura McKinney (Walter) of Morgantown, W.Va.; and son, Douglas Haden (Allison) and his grandchildren, Natalie and Lauren of Charlotte, N.C. He is also survived by his brothers, J. Richard Haden, Jr. (Mary Kay) of Kennett Square, Pa., and James F. Haden (JoAnne) of Charlotte, N.C.; a niece and several nephews. He is also survived by his long-time partner, Doris Huff of Wilsonville, Ore.; her daughters, Jennifer Beal (Steve), Melissa Olson (Gunnar), and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 30 years, Elizabeth Flanagan.
Raised in Morgantown, W.Va, Bill was a born extrovert who enjoyed meeting new people and engaging them with his well-developed sense of humor. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1964 from West Virginia University, where he was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He received a master's degree in Government from The George Washington University in 1965. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Charleston in December 1999. In 2005, his alma mater awarded him a distinguished services award for his contributions and achievements in higher education.
Following graduate school, he served in the U.S. Army as a Military Intelligence officer in Portland and left the Army as a First Lieutenant. In 1967, he returned to West Virginia to begin his career in educational fund raising and higher education administration. He held positions in Development, Alumni Relations, and Public Affairs at West Virginia University, the University of Rochester, The University of Chicago, and Reed College in Portland, Ore.. He was also acting president of Reed in the early 1990's. He returned to West Virginia in 1994, where he served an 11-year tenure as President of West Virginia Wesleyan College. He retired from that position at the end of the 2006 academic year, where he was the second-longest serving president in the College's history.
During his career, Bill was a founding member of the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship Program Board of Control. He served as a Trustee of the Methodist Theological School in Ohio from 2000 to 2006 and served as a member of The United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) from 2000 to 2008. He also served on the Board of Directors of Africa University in Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2012.
In retirement, his experience in and commitment to higher education infused his service as a life trustee on the Willamette University Board of Trustees. Bill served as the Co-Chair of the RA Booth Society of Willamette University, in addition to his very generous provision in his estate plan for Willamette's endowment.
Bill was always willing to share his extensive leadership skills throughout his retirement, serving on the Board of Directors for multiple organizations. In July 2007, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and in 2011 he became a member of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette. In October 2006, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Chamber Music Northwest, where he eventually served as President of the Board, which was a fitting post given his love of classical music to the end of his life.
He served as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church in Portland, where he was a member for all the years he lived in Oregon. He was also a member of the Board of Directors on the Northwest United Methodist Foundation.
One of his proudest accomplishments in retirement was serving as Chairman of the Portland Host Committee for General Conference in 2016. In that role, he was responsible for recruiting and training more than 600 volunteers to greet the thousands who arrived in Portland, Ore., from around the world to attend The United Methodist Church's General Conference.
Bill lived at SpringRidge Court for the last years of his life and his family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care they provided to him.
Family and friends are welcome to join the memorial service celebrating his life which will be held on April 12, 2025, at 12 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1838 Southwest Jefferson Street, Portland, Ore. A live stream will be available click here. A reception at the church with a light lunch will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church of Portland or Willamette University. Condolences may be shared at Legacy.com.

I knew Bill through Chamber Music Northwest--he was a great fan and ardent supporter of the music at Reed College. Bill was always exceptionally kind to me and took an interest in my family. I shall miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to Doris and the rest of your family.

I knew William Haden only through my medical practice; I saw him as a patient. However, in those too brief visits I came to know him as a wise, gifted and caring man who always raised his hand when people asked for help, no matter if it was a huge organization or a small volunteer entity. He shared his enthusiasm and intelligence liberally, making an impact on so many organizations and individuals. I am empathetic for your loss, but know you can take solace in his life well lived.

It was an honour to work with Bill at Reed: approachable, impeccably professional, gracious in responding to even the most trivial request, Bill helped me navigate the sometimes challenging transition to Reed - straight from graduate school into the hurly- burly of Reed's life of the mind. With gratitude I remember Bill. Lena Lencek, Professor Emerita of Russian and Humanities

Bill was a lovely gentleman with a great sense of humor as well as absolute integrity. An invitation from Bill led to one of the high points of my life, working with residents at Willamette View to create a theater piece about late in life choices. When he became acting president of Reed I gave him my expired Actors Equity card, and when he went from Reed to Virginia he built a performing arts center. It was always a joy to see him at chamber music concerts or wherever our paths crossed. Many blessings!

Bill Haden's memory always bring a smile to my face and a lift to my heart. I arrived at Reed in F'89 as a new chemistry prof, and Bill was the friendliest person on campus, whether in a college meeting, discussing college/chem/lab finances, or in a chance encounter walking across campus. Bill set the standard for making higher ed a welcoming environment. May his spirit and example lead us through our lives and be a comfort to all who knew him. Thank you, Bill!

Bill Haden was an extraordinary person. When I started at WV Wesleyan in the fall of 1997, I was the first person in my family to go to college, and we had no idea what we were doing. I will always remember the kindness President Haden showed to my parents and how he made us all feel welcome and at home and like we belonged in the college setting. I have many fond memories of receptions and student dinners at his home, which were always lively and engaging (at one dinner, he required all of us to eat with chopsticks, which was a first for me at the time :) He and Betsy were an iconic couple, and we all admired and looked up to them.

After I graduated, I was lucky enough to work in a one-year position as President Haden´s assistant, as part of Wesleyan´s capital campaign (a position two graduates had held before me). Everything I learned from Bill in that role laid the foundation for my 20-year career working in nonprofit administration and fundraising. He set me on a path that I never would have found otherwise. He also helped me develop in personal ways. I was a timid driver, and he wanted to change that, so he insisted (with love :) that I keep driving him to catch his flights at the Pittsburgh airport until I was confident doing so. He was incredibly kind and funny, and I loved being in his company. He wanted every Wesleyan student to succeed and would go out of his way to help in ways that I don´t think were typical of a college president.

He was also very supportive of my sister, Denae, and of my husband, Justin, during their years at Wesleyan. Justin and I still display on the mantle in our home a beautiful platter made by a WV artisan that Bill and Betsy gave us as a wedding gift. He always made me feel brave and confident and cared for, and he brought out the best in me, as he did so many others. When I last spoke with Bill about five years ago, hearing his voice brought all those warm feelings back to me. He was a wonderful man. I express my sincerest condolences to his family, and to his partner Doris, whom he spoke very fondly of in our last conversation. Bill was a true mentor to me and someone I will never forget.

Bill was never the loudest voice in the Willamette Board room, but when he spoke everyone listened intently. Thank you for your wisdom and guidance to our Board of Trustees.

President Haden and Betsy were so kind to me at West Virginia Wesleyan. Coming from Massachusetts to WVWC was a big adjustment and I remember being welcomed at their home when I first arrived then doing my work study in the Office of Advancement. After graduation, back in MA I can still remember the phone ringing and President Haden asking if I would work for him for a year on their capital campaign and that he'd help me get a job in Boston afterwards. Things I remember about him is teaching me the importance of shopping locally, philanthropy, stewardship. Taking his green Subaru to the airport to pick up a guest speaker. Helping to organize the Board of Trustees meeting. He brought me to the local bank to get a car loan when I couldn't get approved anywhere for no credit history. He made a call to Harvard when I applied back home. One student, out of thousands whose lives he either directly or indirectly effected. He had a huge impact on mine and I am so grateful. My sincerest condolences to his family. Thank you President Haden.

Bill and Betsy both helped to shape my college experience at West Virginia Wesleyan. I always appreciated their support and kind words of encouragement during my school days. I remember fond times spent at their house for picnics and college events. I will forever cherish the fond memories I have of both Bill and Betsy. My sincere condolences go out to their family and friends.

Laura, Doug, Natalie and Lauren, Richard, James and Doris,
I was saddened to learn about Bill´s death. We knew each other through our love of Wesleyan, our work with the WV Conference, UMC, MTSO, and Africa University. My son was one of his "presidential scholars" at Wesleyan. I last visited with him at General Conference in Portland. I admired him greatly, from his leadership to his subtle wit. He helped shape my son, serving as a catalyst to his growth. My life was made better by the intertwining of our life-journeys. I pray that you will find comfort and Christs peace during this time of grief. Bill is now with the angels saying something funny to them about ampersands. God´s blessing on each of you.
