Gary Alan Toole, 75, passed away on February 1, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. Born on
December 16, 1950, in Ogden, Utah, Gary lived a life marked by adventure, creativity, and quiet
strength.
Gary spent his formative years in Beaverton, Oregon, where he completed his high school
education. He later earned an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portland
Community College, laying the foundation for a career shaped by precision and problemsolving.
In 1970, Gary answered the call to serve his country and was voluntarily drafted into the U.S.
Army. Trained as an "11 Bravo" infantryman for combat service in Vietnam, his orders were
unexpectedly changed just one week before deployment. Instead of Southeast Asia, Gary was
stationed in Germany where he served by driving armored personnel carriers—an experience
that left a lasting impression on him.
Gary had a deep appreciation for the world around him and a passion for exploration. Even
during his bachelor years, he traveled extensively to visit ancient ruins and historic sites. His
love of travel continued throughout his life. In 2024, he and his wife Jann embarked on a
remarkable journey around the world by cruise ship, navigating the Horn of Africa. The
following year brought another unforgettable voyage as they cruised through the
Mediterranean.
Married to Jann (Janice) Toole for 22 years, Gary found joy and companionship in their shared
adventures and everyday moments alike. He is also remembered with affection by his Aunt
Dena Iverson of Vancouver, cousin Lora Knowlton of Colorado and Lynda and Glenn Geiger of
Washington.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, J. Kenneth Toole and Grace A. Toole and Uncle
Richard Iverson.
A man of many interests, Gary found peace in fly fishing and exhilaration on two wheels—
motorcycle riding was more than a hobby; it was a passion that brought him freedom and joy.
He also expressed himself through drawing and ink art, channeling his creativity into detailed
works that reflected both patience and imagination.
Those who knew Gary remember him as easygoing and fun to be around—a person whose
presence brought warmth to any room. His gentle spirit and zest for life left an indelible mark
on those fortunate enough to share in his journey.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Graveside Service will be held on
February 12, 2026, from 02:00 PM to 02:30 PM at Willamette National Cemetery 11800 SE Mt.
Scott Blvd.
