William Wayne Hartman, age 79, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on December 15, 2022 in Springfield Missouri. William was born in Stillwater, OK to William Wayne Hartman Sr. and Margaret Gage Hartman on June 17, 1943.
He completed a Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Kansas in 1966, and a Master of Arts in Trombone Performance at the University of Iowa in 1972. William was a member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for 47 years, since 1974 and worked as professor of music at Missouri State University for 36 years, from 1974-2010. He holds the role of Faculty Emeritus at Missouri State University.
He served in the United States Marine Band, "The President's Own" from 1968-72, and toured with the internationally acclaimed Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1973-74.
William married Ellen Thompson on August 13, 1977. To this union were born three children, Brandon, Barry, and Brett.
William is survived by his wife, Ellen; sons and their spouses, Brandon (Laurie) of Fort Myers, FL, Barry (Hannah) of Springfield, MO, Brett (Marni) of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren Bryce, Brielle, Charlie, Brynn, and Bailey; and brother Gage of Salt Lake City, UT and sister Cindi, Mulberry, FL.
While a member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, he recorded the albums 7.5 on the Richter Scale and Kenton Plays Chicago for Creative World records. He was also a member of the orchestra for the national touring company of Jesus Christ Superstar. While he was a professor at Missouri State University, he maintained a busy and diverse performance schedule in the area. He had performed with the St. Louis and Kansas City Symphonies. In Branson, MO, he had performed with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, Kenny Rogers, Mel Torme, Wayne Newton, Johnny Mathis, Lee Greenwood, Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass, and Les Brown and His Band of Renown. In addition to being a member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, he performed with the Springfield Regional Opera Orchestra, the Springfield Brass Quintet, the Missouri Brass Consortium, and the Missouri Jazz Orchestra (MOJO). For 31 years, William was also the conductor and director of Caduceus – The Doctor's Band.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Due to inclement weather, burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 5201 S. Southwood Road, Springfield, Missouri.
