Bill Hartman passed away peacefully at home on a beautiful summer morning after battling cancer. Ever the quipster, his keen wit brought heartfelt laughter to all who knew him. Bill was born in Sacramento and grew up in Berkeley, where he graduated from Thousand Oaks Elementary, Garfield Jr. High, and Berkeley High School. He attended Stanford University, earning a BA in History, and served as a First Lieutenant- Army Intelligence in Washington, D.C. He then returned to Berkeley to study law at Cal, where he met Patricia Hickman. Bill and Pat wed in 1964, raised three children and remained together for 49 years, until her passing in 2013. Bill began his legal career as a prosecutor in the Contra Costa County DA's office. As a trial lawyer, he later became a named partner at several firms in both Contra Costa and San Francisco. He was President of the Mt. Diablo Bar Association, Chairman of the Walnut Creek Planning Commission, and served on his church vestry. During retirement, he volunteered at John Muir Hospital, Loaves & Fishes and other community service organizations. Bill is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, brother, as well as his beloved companion of nine years. Bill will be profoundly missed by all who loved him.
