William "Bill" Hild, 87, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Angelhaus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Fr. Gregory Tschakert officiating.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

A time for fellowship and light refreshments will follow the burial at the parish hall.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, at Schriver's Memorial Chapel with a liturgical wake and rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church.

Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.schriversmemorial.com. Services will be recorded and posted on Schriver's website following the service.

Bill was born on April 22, 1938, in Britton, SD. to William T. and Lorraine (Stadler) Hild. The family moved to Aberdeen, SD, in 1941.

He attended Howard Hedger, Monroe Junior High and Central High School, graduating with the class of 1956. Bill participated in track in junior and senior high school. He also enjoyed playing chess. He was the Central High School chess champion in 1956.

Bill worked as a switchman for the Milwaukee Railroad during the summers of 1956 and 1957.

He attended Northern State Teachers College and earned a one-year certificate in 1957. He taught at a rural school in 1957-1958. He then went on to earn a two-year teaching certificate and was able to teach in elementary schools.

He taught in Hitchcock, SD, where he met Mary Jo Lamberty, who was also a teacher in that school. He and Mary Jo married in Redfield, SD, on June 8, 1961.

Bill earned a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1964. He then accepted a teaching position in Ortonville, MN. There, his daughter, Kim, and son Bill Jr. were born.

He earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education in 1966. He continued teaching until moving to Hector, MN, and then Aberdeen, SD, where he served as an elementary school principal. Later in his career, he wanted to step back from administration and return to the classroom, where he was a teacher at O.M. Tiffany. He finished his career as an adjunct professor at Northern State University, overseeing student teachers.

He taught many elementary students how to play chess and formed chess clubs.

Bill enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, and traveling. His grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas, and great-grandchild, Tristyn, were the absolute light of his life.

He was a diehard New York Yankees and Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan.

Bill enjoyed volunteering at the Dakota Prairie Museum and The Boys & Girls Club of Aberdeen Area.

Bill and Mary Jo enjoyed traveling through the United States and becoming active in church activities. They also enjoyed seeing their children, grandchildren, and great-grandson grow up and seeing them often. Bill and Mary Jo also enjoyed holding family get-togethers and celebrating holidays and birthdays together.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Kim (Greg) Hanson; and son, Bill Jr.; granddaughter, Liz (Matt) Collins; grandson Nick (Hailey) Hanson; and great-grandson Tristyn Collins; sister, Jean Himes; brothers-in law Ron (Shar) Lamberty and Gary (Renae) Lamberty; sisters in law Sheila Terry, Carolyn Lamberty and Susan Foster.

Preceding Bill's death are his wife of 64 years, Mary Jo; Parents, William T. and Lorraine Hild; brothers-in-law, Stuart Himes, Jim Lamberty, and Bob Lamberty. Fr. Darrell Lamberty and Paul Lamberty.
