William "Bill" Irmen, Sr., Sawyer, ND, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.
William Arthur Irmen was born November 24, 1945, to Arthur and Alberta (Klumph) Irmen, in New Rockford, ND. Bill attended a one room schoolhouse in Munster Township outside of New Rockford and St. James Academy in New Rockford where he excelled at baseball, football, and raising hell. He graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Willow City and then attended meat cutting school in
Toledo, Ohio.
Bill married Andrea Heilman on March 16, 1966 in Carrington, ND. After enlisting in the United States Army in 1966, he was stationed in West Germany and was honorably discharged in 1968. After returning from West Germany, Bill's job as a meat cutter took them to Valley City, Fargo, and Minot before settling in their current home outside of Sawyer in 1972. He worked as an award-winning meat department manager for Piggly Wiggly until his retirement in 2011. Even after retirement Bill continued to run the meat department at Velva Fresh Foods up until his passing.
Bill was always an outdoorsman, but he fell in love with his land outside of Sawyer, where he would watch the wildlife and grow squash, pumpkins, and vegetables. He was an avid trapper and enjoyed deer hunting with his sons, friends, and grandchildren. Bill instilled his love of baseball into his kids and played softball into his sixties, playing his last years with his sons. Bill was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and he loved family gatherings.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Velva.
His loving family includes: wife, Andrea of 57 years. Children: Cindy Brinster, Sawyer, Bill (Amy) Irmen, Minot, Andy Irmen, Sawyer, Bob Irmen,
Mesa, Az. Grandchildren: Christina, Cory, Carly (Jerome Schubert) Boechler, and Frances Brinster, Madison (Devin) Koppinger, Riley (Chauncey Callier) Irmen, Brady, Tyler, and Matthew Irmen. Great-grandchildren: Mikaela Hallamyer, Ryan Stevenson and Bella Schubert, Aiden and Parker Koppinger. Siblings: Susan (Roger) Carmody, Tom (Nancy) Irmen, Rita Irmen, Mitch (Heidi) Irmen, Jackie (Bruce) Krebsbach. Sister-in-law JoAnn Vollrath and brothers-in-law James (Vi) Heilman and Daryl Galt as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Carol Galt, Virginia Schollmeyer, Jeanie Irmen, brothers-in-law Gary Vollrath and Bill Schollmeyer, and nephews Matthew Irmen and James Andrew Heilman.
Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Interment: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva, ND, in the spring of 2023.
Visitation: Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
