James Irmen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lewis Funeral Home - Navarre Chapel on Jan. 12, 2026.
James Robert Irmen, 92, of Navarre, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife of 68 years, Joyce, and family.
Born December 8, 1933, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Norman and Rose Irmen, Jim was raised in Davenport, Iowa. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a Linguistic Specialist. His lifelong commitment to personal growth was best exemplified at age 55, when he earned his undergraduate degree from Marian College-a true testament to his perseverance and intellectual curiosity.
Jim enjoyed a distinguished 33-year career with Caterpillar Inc., where he played a pivotal role in developing the first commercially available Database Management System (IMS) through a groundbreaking collaboration with Rockwell Industries and IBM. IMS remains a cornerstone of many IT systems more than five decades later-a lasting legacy of his vision and expertise. He retired in 1991 after successfully establishing the IT organization for Caterpillar's Engine Plant division in Lafayette, Indiana.
In retirement, Jim found joy on the water, boating on Dale Hollow Lake in Kentucky and the Santa Rosa Sound in Florida. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and a loyal Purdue supporter. Above all, he was his family's biggest fan, never missing an opportunity to cheer on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, William (Gretchen), Cheryl (John) Lewis, James (Paula), Greg (Nadia), and Gerald (Anita); 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass with military honors will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 9am at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Interment will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Sylvester Catholic Church to support their ongoing community outreach efforts.
