Mr. William ‘Marty’ King, 55, of Stoney Creek Drive, Elberton, peacefully entered his heavenly home on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. His last days were spent enjoying life, taking a few adventures, eating as much candy as he wanted, and surrounded by the love and care of his family and close friends.
Marty was born in Elberton on August 25, 1969, only child of Trudy Johnson King and the late Jerry Micheal King, better known as “Pops”. He was well respected and loved by his classmates from the 1987 graduating class of Elbert County High School and earned his bachelor’s degree of art after attending the University of Georgia. He was the Vice President of King’s Monument Company and proud of the legacy his parents created. Marty was a member of First Baptist Church, though in his final years attended Elberton First Presbyterian Church beside “Mama Trudy” where he fell in love with old hymns and wonderful teaching that not just enriched his life with a stronger, deeper faith but a relationship with God that he knew would carry him through and the ability to never fear his future, as he felt it was always in God’s hands. Marty formerly served as Trustee of the Board of the Elberton Granite Association and was a member of the Elberton Country Club.
In addition to his mother, Trudy, of Elberton, he is survived by his children: Matthew John King and Katherine Mariel King; aunt, Tammy Fortson; cousins: Mendy (Travis) Christian and Jamie Carrington; former wife, Jean Delaney King; special friend, Becky Steele; and a host of lifelong friendships.
Marty was a loving father, son, and friend to so many. He always had a smile on his face even though life was hard. He had a passion for all things sports especially when it came to his Georgia Bulldogs or a beautiful green golf course on a Sunday afternoon final round.
Family and friends are invited to come together for visitation on Tuesday, July 22, from 6:00-8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. During other times the family may be contacted at the home in Stoney Creek.
The service celebrating Marty’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 23, at 11:00a.m.in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Charles Romine. He will be laid to rest with his “Pops” in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Phil Berryman, Tim Frazier, Jim Hulme, Chuck Moore, Alan Johnson, and Chad Adams. Honorary Pallbearers are Marty’s family at King’s Moument Company.
