Larkin - William John Larkin, age 73, of Jacksonville, Florida, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at University of Florida Health, surrounded by family. William had quietly battled liver cancer over the past year.

William (Bill) John Larkin was born on September 26, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, the eldest of nine children of John B. and Rose (Gullo) Larkin. He was baptized at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Dubuque, IA and confirmed at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, IA. Bill attended country school in Allamakee County and graduated from Saint Patrick's Catholic High School in Waukon in 1969.

Bill joined the US Navy in 1969, serving four years of active duty during the Vietnam War. After an honorable discharge he returned to the family farm briefly and later moved to Dubuque to work at John Deere. In the early 1980's, seeking new opportunities and a warmer climate, Bill left Iowa and moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he would live out his remaining years.

In Florida, he worked a variety of jobs over the years, including asbestos abatement, forklift operation, Panera delivery, and driving for Uber. Bill enjoyed being around people and sports of all kinds. His Florida family called him 'Billy Bob.' He was known for his big heart, his quiet demeanor that made people feel at ease, and his unwavering loyalty as a friend who always showed up when it mattered most.

Bill attended various events and fundraisers that were supported by veterans. The bond formed with his military family was important to Bill. He was also a member of the American Pool Players Association on and off since 1980, competing in various leagues and events, including national competitions in Las Vegas. As he aged, his gait became a shuffle, but his game was still sharp.

Family remained important to Bill, and he visited Iowa when possible, attending annual gatherings such as Larkin Fest. As the eldest brother, he was a gentle role model who never spoke in anger. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rose Larkin, and his brother Edward.

Bill is survived by seven siblings: Lawrence (Char) of St. Joseph, MO; Joseph (Amy) of Boonville, MO; Robert (Peggy) of Dorchester, IA; Kathleen (Karl) Schoenknecht of Strasburg, PA; Ann (Rick) Tebbs of Fort Madison, IA; Marie (Kevin) Bye of Greenfield, WI; and Rose (D. Carl) Evans of Johnston, IA; and his sister-in-law, Sue Sivesind of Waukon.

The Larkin family extends their sincere appreciation to Robin Lauramoore of Jacksonville, for her unwavering friendship and support for Bill over the years. Her attention and advocacy were a true blessing for our family. You are forever in our hearts.

The tribute above was prepared by Bill's loving family.

A Celebration of Life will take place on September 28, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Last Call Neighborhood Tavern, in Jacksonville. A service and burial will be held at Saint Mary's Hanover Catholic Church in rural Waukon, Iowa, at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of CEDAR BAY FUNERAL HOME, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, Florida, 32218. (904) 714-1110.

Wow that was one of the best life tributes I have ever read (and I´ve read many even written a few). I want to say thank you to his family for giving him such a loving and thoughtful obituary. I am one of Billy Bob´s adopted family from Jacksonville and have known him for 35+ years. He was one of the most kind and meek people I have ever met. He taught me a thing or two on the pool table and I enjoyed watching him play. He was like an uncle to so many of us and a great uncle to our children. My daughter was one of the lucky ones to grow up with him around knowing he was always watching out for us. I have many great memories with BB and will cherish them until we meet again. I am so glad we were able to reunite recently at a couple of the Family BBQ´s at Fran´s house and even look at pictures he had from the good ole days. RIP BB give everyone in heaven a hug from me!
