Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Dec. 16, 2025.
William "Bill" Ellwood Lewis Jr., 79, went home to be with the Lord on December 2, 2025, surrounded by his family in Sharptown, Maryland. He was born on July 1, 1946 to the late Reverend William E. Lewis and the late Helen Grimm Lewis of
Baltimore, Maryland. Bill is also preceded in death by his sister Susan Fritzel of Lutherville, Maryland.
Bill grew up in Arbutus, Maryland and graduated from Catonsville High School in 1964. He served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves from 1965 to 1971, and was a submariner on the USS Sea Leopard. After his service, he worked as a mechanical engineer for Westinghouse-Hittman Nuclear Incorporated and Advanced Resource Development Corporation, both in Columbia, Maryland. He ended his career at Catholic University's Vitreous State Laboratory in Washington D.C. He retired to the Eastern Shore to live in the same small town as his grandchildren.
Of all Bill's jobs, being a grandfather was his favorite. He was Poppop to everyone: his grandkids, their friends, and many of the children of Sharptown. He spent his retirement supporting, caring for, and enjoying time with his loving family, and volunteering as a regular substitute at his daughter's in-home daycare. He also took on the role as chauffeur to his grandchildren, transporting them as needed to and from their activities, sports, and part time jobs. His house was also the go-to destination for sleepovers when his grandchildren were younger. Sleepovers with Poppop meant playing video games on an original Nintendo or Sega Genesis, drinking chocolate milk, and eating his special, extra eggy French toast with butter and cinnamon sugar.
Bill is survived by son Robert Lewis, son Jon Lewis and his wife Heather, and daughter Melissa Amon and her husband Larry. He is also survived by daughter-in-law Ilsa Les Callette and her husband Kevin. He leaves behind grandchildren Jonathan Lewis, Rachel Schmucki and her husband Kaleb, Jocelyn Gossel and her husband Jacob, Matthew Lewis and his fiancé Rebekah McMichael, Jacob Amon, Caleb Amon, and Samuel Amon. Bill's family takes comfort in knowing that he is at peace in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and that they as believers will one day be reunited with him there. This is his greatest legacy.
