William Roland "Bill" McLean, age 54, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023. Bill was born in Beckley, WV, and was raised in Hinton, WV. He was the son of the late Samuel D. McLean, Sr., and Marilyn McCoy McLean. A loving and devoted father, brother, son, uncle, and friend, who had a keen wit, a strong intellect, and a huge heart.
Bill was a graduate of Hinton High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Washington & Lee University, where he was an active member of the Chi Psi Lodge. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the Owen School of Business at Vanderbilt University. Prior to business school, Bill worked at Flat Top National Bank in Bluefield, WV, in the trust department. He moved to Washington, DC, where he worked as a paralegal at the White & Case law firm, then transitioned to a lobbyist position at the Can Manufacturers Association on Capitol Hill.
Following business school, Bill worked in San Francisco at AOL, eLuxury, and E! Networks, before moving back East. He worked for Comcast in Philadelphia, PA, then moved to Manhasset, NY, to work in strategy for Viacom Entertainment Group and Verizon. Bill had an entrepreneurial spirit and loved helping his clients, and at the time of his death, he was working independently as a business consultant. He served on the Board of Trustees, Member, and Past President of the Manhasset Public Library. He was active with the Manhasset Yacht Club, the local Boy Scouts and an avid supporter of Washington and Lee University.
Bill grew up playing baseball and basketball and loved spending time in the great outdoors. He had a passion for history and reading, and he enthusiastically pursued a wide variety of outdoor sports from mountain biking and boating to fly fishing. He was known to be a friend to all and loved his family, West Virginia, his Scotch-Irish heritage, American history, his friends and being from south of the Mason-Dixon line. Bill was an exceptional dad and teacher to his two children, William Roland McLean, II (15) and Regina Grange McLean (14).
Bill is survived by his two children; his brother, Samuel David McLean, Jr., (Atlanta); and his sister-in-law, Caroline Wyche McLean; nephew, Samuel D. McLean III; and niece, Sarah Virginia McLean, all of Atlanta. He is also survived by his former spouse, Maureen Grange-McLean, of Manhasset, NY.
