William Alexander Melton, Jr., affectionately known as Bill, was born on February 18, 1942, in
Wadesboro, North Carolina. He was the beloved son of the late Lois and William Alexander Melton, Sr., and grew up alongside his brother, Bobby Lee Melton.
From an early age, Bill displayed a deep love for music. During his years at Rockingham High School, he played the trombone, trumpet, and percussion, talents that reflected both his creativity and discipline. His passion for music and communication led him to work as an announcer at the local radio station WAYN in Rockingham, marking the beginning of a lifelong connection to broadcasting. In December of 1961, at the age of 19, Bill began dating Julia Rose Skipper, the woman who would become the love of his life.
Bill continued his education at Western Carolina University, where he was a proud member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. While attending college, he worked at the radio station WMSJ in Sylva, North Carolina, diligently supporting himself as he pursued his degree. His senior year of college he was voted the president of the student body.
Following his graduation, Bill proposed to Julia, and they were married on August 22, 1965. Their marriage, which spanned 60 years, was a true partnership built on love, friendship, and unwavering devotion. Together they welcomed their daughter, Paige Melton, in March of 1969.
Bill began his professional career with Procter & Gamble before transitioning into medical sales, where he spent the majority of his career with Baxter International. He rose to the role of corporate manager, earning the respect of colleagues through his integrity, leadership, and commitment to excellence.
Above all else, Bill was a devoted husband and father. He and Julia were best friends, inseparable in life, and deeply devoted to one another. In his final days, his greatest concern was being apart from her-a testament to the depth of his love. He was the best husband and father anyone could have hoped for, and he lived a life marked by purpose, kindness, and dedication to his family.
William Alexander Melton, Jr. lived a very good life and will be missed every single day by those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Melton; his daughter, Paige Squires; his son-in-law, Gil Squires; and his beloved grandchildren, Julian and Xan Squires.
A private funeral service will be held for the family.
