William Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Mar. 11, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William N. Mitchell a devoted husband, proud patriot, loyal friend, and beloved family man. William passed away on March 5,2026 at the age of 49 leaving behind a legacy of service, friendship, and love for the people and passions that shaped his life.

Born on December 1,1976 in Lawton, Oklahoma. William grew up with a love for sports, especially baseball. He played baseball throughout high school and college, carrying with him the teamwork, discipline, and camaraderie that would define much of his life. During his time serving in the United States Air Force, he continued his passion for athletics by playing softball on the All Air Force team.

William proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Air Force. During his distinguished career, he worked as a medical technician and later served as both a enlisted recruiter and doctor recruiter, helping guide and mentor many young men and women who chose to follow the path of service. His dedication to his country and his belief in doing the right thing were at the core of who he was. A true patriot, he loved America and was proud to wear the uniform.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn, his high school sweetheart in Lawton, Oklahoma on February 14,1998. They celebrated 28 years of marriage this year. Their lifelong partnership was built on love, loyalty, forgiveness, and shared adventures, creating a strong and joyful family life together.

Outside of his service, William lived life with enthusiasm and energy. He was a passionate sports fan who proudly cheered for the Oklahoma Sooners, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Seattle Mariners. He admired the skill and the humble demeanor of his favorite players Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Sanders. As a dedicated Thunder season ticket holder, he attended many games and loved sharing those experiences with family and friends.

He also enjoyed shooting sports, traveling, grilling for family gatherings, bourbon, and spending time with those he loved most. Known for his warm, fun loving personality, he was incredibly social and truly never met a stranger. Whether at a ball game, around the grill, or on a trip somewhere new, he had a way of making people feel welcome and valued.

William especially cherished time with his wife and kids. He treasured the friendships he built over a lifetime. He enjoyed simple pleasures, good company, a great steak, a ballgame, and meaningful conversations with the people around him.

Above all else, he was a man's man with a generous heart, someone who always tried to do the right thing by people no matter what and who lived his life with integrity, pride, and kindness.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Carolyn, and their children Trevor, Camden, Lauren, and Cali as well as his brother Danny, sister Susan Kelly, his chosen brother Don Ricci, and his father William "Bill" Akins as well as many extended family and the many friends whose lives he touched.

Though he may be gone, the stories, laughter, and memories he gave us will live on forever.

There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they are gone, the light remains.
