HIAWATHA, IOWA
William “Willie” Junior Morris, 70, of Hiawatha, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at his son’s home in Fairfax surrounded by his family.
A celebration of life and music jam will be held at Elk’s Lodge #251 in Cedar Rapids from 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Willie was born February 22, 1955, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of William and Harriet (Given) Morris. Willie was raised in the Cedar Rapids area and later received his GED.
Willie had a passion for music at a young age. He was self-taught on the guitar and participated in his 1st high school band called Country Crusaders. He was part of several bands throughout the years. In the late 70’s, the band “Upshot” was formed. They had success in the local area and released a vinyl single in 1982 as part of a contest. “Cedar Rapids Smile” was played on local radio stations and at the local Minor League Stadium in Cedar Rapids. He spent the latter part of his music career as part of bands called “Dancin Country” and The Gamblers. The Gamblers were inducted into the MAMA Hall of Fame in 2019.
Willie enjoyed teaching kids and helping them learn to play the guitar, and his favorite gig was playing in local retirement homes where he was truly able to appreciate music. Willie struggled with addiction to alcohol. This disease impacted him throughout his life, and he was very proud that he was able to spend his last 11 ½ years of life Alcohol-Free. He spent several years helping others fight their addictions as part of AA meetings or just being that ear to help them through the struggles of addiction. When not enjoying music, Willie's other passion in life was fishing. He enjoyed going out to the great fishing spots with his family and friends, especially with his brother, Robert. Willie enjoyed spending time with his family, telling stories and jokes, and being the entertainment to help others around him laugh.
Survivors include his children: Nikki (Todd), Brett (Jen), Mandy, Willie (Lacy), Emma Morris, and Luke Malone. His many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his significant other, Cheryl Olson; siblings: Mary Jane (Richard) Overman, Larry (Nancy) Morris, and a sister-in-law, Lois Morris, all of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Richard and Robert (Mary) Morris; his grandsons: Larry Wagamon and Hunter Kuipers.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids for their compassionate care.
