William Nilsson Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

William Francis "Bill" Nilsson, Jr., passed away on August 30, 2025, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, at the age of 89 after a short battle with cancer. A devoted husband, father, public servant, scholar, and veteran, Bill led a life marked by dedication to education, country, and family.

Born on June 1, 1936, in Stamford, Connecticut, Bill was the son of William and Alice Nilsson. He pursued higher education with distinction, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Lehigh University before continuing on with graduate Finance coursework at Dartmouth University, and finally receiving his master's degree in Dynamics of Organizations from the Wharton School of Business. While at Lehigh, he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, a brotherhood he remained involved with throughout his life, maintaining relationships with fellow members and leadership. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a career defined by service and leadership.

Bill served as a Business Administrator at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute for Environmental Medicine. In this role, he contributed to the advancement of scientific research and institutional excellence. His professional life reflected his commitment to supporting innovation and fostering collaboration within the academic community.

A proud veteran, Bill served his country with honor in the United States Naval Reserve, retired as a Lieutenant Commander, and later as a volunteer for the United States Air Force's 111th Air Wing, where he worked diligently for our nation's veterans. His lifelong interest in military history was more than a hobby; it was an extension of his deep respect for those who served and sacrificed. He remained active in veterans' causes throughout his life, dedicating time to volunteer efforts that supported fellow service members.

Bill's personal life was enriched by his relationships with those closest to him. He was predeceased by his wives, Judith (nee Caley) and Suzanne (nee Murray); his parents; and his sister, Elizabeth. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Kathryn (Jeffrey) Schulte, Kristine (David) Kreisher, and William (Melinda) Nilsson, III; as well as by his grandchildren: Jeffrey (Elle) Schulte, Kirsten Schulte, Erik (Tiffany) Nilsson, and Emma Nilsson; and his great-granddaughter: Harper Rose Schulte.

In addition to his professional accomplishments and military service, Bill found joy in reading-particularly works on military history-and sharing that passion with others. He combined his military interests with a lifelong hobby of model shipbuilding and was an active member of several hobbyist clubs and organizations, including the International Plastic Modeler's Society (Bux-Mont Chapter), Military Officers Association, and Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum.

Bill's thoughtful nature and quiet generosity left a lasting impression on those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing and inspiration to those who carry forward his legacy of service and learning.

A visitation will be held at John J. Bryers Funeral Home in Willow Grove, PA on September 12th, 2025, 10:00-11:00am, followed by a memorial service, 11:00-11:30am. A military burial will be held at St. John Neumann Cemetery, 12:15pm.
